![]() ![]() | Tonight I was bathing my horse for a show tomorrow, he hates his face hosed, but he was tolerating it more than usual(he had his head stretched in the opposite directionof the hose), well after I finished I took him into the barn to get my sweet scraper and a girl said "what's wrong with his eyes?" The color part of his eyes were GONE! It was the strangest thing I have ever witnessed! All you could see was white and a redish colored flap thing...it stayed like that for almost 10 minutes. Slowly they came back into position. I was ******** out! I will never hose his head again!! BTW, it wasn't a direct spray, more like it was raining on his head...Do you think there was any permanent damage?? |

| Senior Member+ | Sounds like his third eyelid. It acts as a squeegee to remove debirs. Maybe it was doing it because of the water in his eye. My mare yawns and her lids sweeps across and grosses me out.

![]() ![]() | It is just that it stayed like like for a while....and as it was coming back the eye would flip from the center to the outside.. |

| Senior Member+ | What do you mean by "flip"? Was it repeatedly jerking from the normal position towards the outside edge of the eye?

| Senior Member+ | Did you shampoo his face? If you did he may have got some suds in his eyes which irritated him.

| Senior Moderator | I have seen dogs that were having a seizure that do that. Or, it was his thrid eyelid - the pictating membrane.

| Senior Member+ | If the eyes were jerking back and forth from the normal position toward the edges of the eye then it could have been some mild seizure activity--this is one of the common early seizure signs called nystagmus. But, without witnessing it I can't say for certain. If it happens again, you should contact your vet and see if you can get some video of it for him to view as it will likely be over by the time he can come examine your horse.
