Hey Ya'll!!!

Well Im new here and thought that I would introduce myself and share my story. Back in January me and my husband decided we were in a position to get a couple of horses. It had been a dream of mine ever since I can remember and my husband was really into the idea too. My husband had very little experience with them but had been around horses before, his aunt owned some years ago. I had been riding and around horses most of my life off and on. I rode when I could and taught myself most of what I know by reading and asking for help from others. We talked to a friend that we had made at the feed store and he had two mares that he was willing to sell. This man does horse rescue with the state and also buys and sells and works with horses for a living. One of the mares had been recently rescued; she was a 2 year old Quarter Horse (and possibly Arab cross); and the other, a 7 year old Stock Paint Mare, was traded for a gelding. Both of these horses had it rough before they came to us. The QH had been bred by a man that was only looking for the money she could bring at one year of age. She delivered her foal, a black filly, on March 26th of this year. Unfortunately because we were only expecting to own two horses and ended up with 4 her and her foal were sold and are now living on 6 acres all to themselves and are spoiled rotten. The SP was bred and we were told this when we bought her but were told that it did not take. This mare, so we found, shows signs late that she is carrying but then ended up carrying her foal about 2-4 weeks late (this is what the vet said to us when he saw the foal). This mare's name is Sassy (Sassyfras Girl). We had her boarded at a guys house where we thought she was safe and being cared for. She was underweight when she was brought to this farm and her weight just diminished over time. She was there for 3 months (give or take) and became a skeleton while there. The guy fed for us but only fed her 6 pounds a orday and she was caring for a foal! He would not allow us to up it. I began to get furious as I watched my mare loose so much weight. We finally found another place to move her to where we can care for her and her foal ourselves. When she left the old place she was at least 300-400 pounds underweight. It was an awful sight. She has been at this new place for about 6 weeks and has made a remarkable recovery. Also on top of all of this we discovered scars in her mouth and she does not like a bit. She goes nuts and I dont blame her. She had also been abused and in some way this involved the saddle as she was very afraid of even the sight of one. But we have overcome all of this with a gentle hand and have decided to ride her (when she is in better shape obviously) with a hackomore. In my opinion there is no point in pushing the bit as she is a good girl Her foal which has been named Sunny (pending registration as Mr Sunny Blue Sky) was born at 7:30 in the morning with the sun high in the sky (hense his name ) on June 1st. He was a very shy and nervous little boy but has come to trust us and come out of his shell more and more every day. His father was another Stock Paint. So far we are able to catch, pet, inspect his mouth, rub him all over except we are working on his belly, halter, lead, hes started with tying, and we can pick up his feet...or should I say he picks them up for us He has also been worked with with all new sounds and things that are around him and he has seen and been in a trailer. Hes coming along very nicely. Well enough chatting here are a few pics:

This was Sassy (and Sunny) on the day that she was removed from the 'old place'

This was her about a week ago.

Most recent pics of Sunny. (And yes thats me )

Sunny at minutes, hours and a day old

Sassy and the saddle. She was not ridden but we have to keep presenting her with the saddle because of her fear of it.

Welcome from PA!

Quite the story you have there. Your horses are beautiful but I personally am in LOVE with Sunny. Something about him strikes me, he just looks like such a doll. Can't wait to see you around more..

Thanks Everyone! Sunny is a charm thats for sure Sassy is really great too! For being through everything she has been through shes really a great horse and is pretty well mannered considering. My favorite thing is she stops with just the word woah and generally no matter whether she is tacked or being worked at all. She will stop mid step while you are leading her if you tell her to! Its makes things so nice And she is so great with the baby. We are able to do anything to this baby and she just goes on about what she is doing. And to think the first time we saw this mare we couldnt get within 10 feet of her.
