Hernias in Horses

I have a mare that was born with an umbilical hernia. I had the vet put a clamp on it and it healed ok, but she has had a bulge down there ever since. She is 6 yrs now, and doesnt seem to be bothered by it. The Bulge is about 6" long and extends from her udder up under her flank. It doesnt push up inside her stomach, and there are no holes that I can feel indicating that there is a hernia present. It seems to have gotten larger in the past few years, but has also really filled out in the past couple of years as well (she is an appendix quarter horse, and has really developed the quarter horse muscling, and is also very well fed and it shows) I am wondering if I have to be worried about this, or if it is normal among horses that had hernias?

Quita had one once, but we wraped it with vet wrap and it went away. (the vet wrap pushed it where its suppost to be)

If it is sill bulging it's possible that it didn't heal as well as you think. I would have the vet examine it the next time you see him and get his opinion.

My quarter horse paint mare had an ambilical hernia and we first tried to push it in and see if it would go away by its self. However it didnt go away so we made a vet appointment and hauled her in and the vet put her down to sleep and he did surgury we got to watch and basicly from what i saw he just took the poutch and cut it off the part that bulges and then i think he just stitched her up and now she is healed and doing great and it hasnt come back and it never should. So you could call your vet and ask about a surgury for it if it wont go away byitself.

I agree with Ryle, I'd have your vet check it to be on the safe side. Freedom had an umbilical hernia and it has shrunk to almost nothing now that she is 6.
