Herda

earlier today i read a thread that mentioned HERDA. i had never heard of it, so i looked into it more. So i was thinking. I have a line bred poco gelding. he is like four generations down from poco bueno and there are i think three other pocos in there along the way. Is this something that my horse could be at risk for? what are the chances that he will have it, and how will i know if he does? i am probably just over reacting....but i am always one to ask lots of questions.

Your horse could be a carrier, and no show the signs but pass them on. Horses afflicted with HERDA have a condition which their skin (for lack of better way to put it) doesn't stick to the muscle. It easily lifts up. These horses can't be ridden because of the damage it could do. I'm sure if BW or JB see this they've got more to say on the subject, lol.

You can find lots of information about this. From what I understand...if your horse has it you would know it. There skin tears super easily to the point where in some horses you cant even put a saddle on their back. If he is a gelding and a carrier...you really dont' have anything to worry about. Unlike HYPP he has to be homozygous positive for the gene to be afflicted.
