Herd Dynamics

The herd dynamics have changed. Bein, the old chestnut mars, is not longer supreme ruler. Dolly has stolen her crown, for now. Dolly has been here now for 3 days and I am only now seeing how the herd has changed it's pecking order. Dolly is not an evil queen ruler so far. I am glad, because Bein couldn't handle it. I think Bein is just un-sure if she is wise enough to re-claim her thrown. My husband is now mad at Dolly because he likes his old horse to be queen. I am sure after they all get to know each other, Bein will become supreme ruler once again.
O' and yes, I know Bein is skinny.

It's very interesting to watch isn't it?? Where I board there is a 20 y/o Arab gelding that has been content being the bottom guy his whole life until about a month ago and he bumped himself up a few notches. Then a few weeks ago when my two went into his pasture he decided to finish climbing that ladder and stand on top LOL

My husbands horse had usually been top dog for a few years prior to this so his world is a bit turned upside down but thats ok he'll adjust but that's not to say it wasn't a blow to his "ego" if you will

I like your herd, they are all so pretty and seem well loved. As for Bein being skinny, is it an age thing with her? I notice the older Arab I referred to earlier is harder to keep weight on and he needs to eat alot and variety where my two are younger and can look at grass and get fat so I haven't had to deal with the effects of ageing yet. Either way she is very pretty but I am in love with your newest edition, it's like looking at a taller female version of my Dollar Bill!

With Bein we have had the vet out several times. Her teeth floated, wormed and what ever else we can think of. We moved here from California about 4 years ago. She didn't do well on the trip out here and has been skinny ever since. I think she is a worrier. I have her on weight builder and she gets senior 15% fat feed with her demand grain ration twice a day. She (they all) get hay 2 or 3 times a day, depending on if they ate their breakfast or not. She has been on this weight building diet for 2 years. She leaves her grain a lot, so I have to put her by herself and let her finish it when she wants to. If I don't put her by her self, she walks away from it and the others eat her left overs. Cleo, my 3 y/o is on the same diet, but she is not skinny, just growing, so I don't want her to get skinny. Velvet and CJ are fat on air horses. I don't worry about them much. I think Bein is having trouble because of her age. My grandpa is 86 years old and 6' 2" and only 150 pounds. He just has no apatite. I think Bein and him have the same problem with weight!

Shell, I didn't even KNOW you had an older mare named Bein! Have you mentioned her before? lol, I'm out of the loop I guess!

I always like seeing how pecking order changes. It's fun to get a hint of what horses in the wild go through as well and to see how horses have relationships with each other and what kind they have.

Keep us updated on who ends up on top!

Ok, Meet Bein

This is Bein, Paint Luver: She is a 20 y/o 14.2 (on her tip toes) Arabian Mare.

Wow Shell, sounds like she is definitely turned into a hard keeper! I had been told they can hold onto traumatic/stressful things longer than a human holding a grudge so I can see that being a real possibility! Sounds like you know what you're talking about and have covered all the bases so theres not much reason to worry and if she is happy(she looks very happy to me) then age is probably a big factor,Lord knows you know alot more than me! LOL

Can I just say that your comment about your grandpa cracked me up LOL and one other thing, I SWEAR you look so much like the woman who plays the lead in "Still Standing", I can't get over the resemblance Thats a complimnet by the way,she is very pretty

LOL, thank you Shell! I think I actually have seen that picture with Loren on her before, but I guess I just didn't know who the horse was at the time! Thank you for introducing her to me! She looks like a pretty mare even if she is a bit skinny and elderly.

Thanks! we are doing our best with Bein. She paces the fence, on both sides of it and even if the gait is open! She is a weird old girl.

I don't know the show you are talking about, but I guess I am going to have to look and see if I do look like that woman. I didn't realize my eyes were closed in that picture. Here is one with my eyes open!
