Helpfull tips for shows! and general grooming

Well i thought i would put up some of the things i no to do before a show... If you have anything else to add just add them on! Hope i can help some of you guys! ... also got some from some different web sites and such to help you guys

SHOWS
Whitening socks
Wash socks or white areas first with shampoo. Towel dry. You can squeeze on lemon juice (this removes grass/mud/manure stains and helps brighten white parts) and rub it in, concentrating on stains. If your horse has a cut, be very careful that you don't get lemon juice in it. Dry it off and wash again. Leave the white parts slightly damp. Pat on baking soda /cornstarch, let it dry, and wash again. Let it dry, and there's your brilliantly white show.

Show 'n' Sheen for Spooky Horses
If your horse doesnt like the spray dont bother him with it, put it on a clean rag and wipe it on it. Makes for a less stressed horse!

Washing
If your going to wash your horses mane ans tail before a show with shampoo then remember clean hair is slippery. Wash a few days before the show so when it comes to braid the day before they wont slip out. Also the same with show sheen.

GROOMING AT HOME
People who ride in the snow...
To keep ice balls from the tail put baby oil on it so they slip right off!

Prevent stains
If you have a light-colored horse, who consistently gets dirty in the same spots, you can use a spot remover or a dry bath (such as Miracle Groom or Cowboy Magic green spot remover). Once the spot is gone, follow with Show Sheen or any other silicon-based spray. This works to clean the spots, and it also prevents the recurrence of spots, saving valuable grooming time.

Cleaning hooves
To clean your horses hooves, use a hoof pick. To lift your horses hoof go all the way dow the horses leg and sqeeze with thumb and pointer finger. Then clean out all of the hoof except the frog.

Hair thats been rubbed away
If you horse has rubbed his hair away on his tail or a neck rug has taken some of his mane, try massaging conditioner into it. Do this once a week and you will def see results!

Bathing horses and hooves
When you bath your horse it tends to dry out its feet so remember to put on some hoof grease after every bath.

will con soon...

If you have a native with a fine tail or mane, plait it the night before and then take it out on the morning, makes it looks thick and wavy, gives it more body.

On white socks i use talc powder. Just put some on your hands or a rag and white over the area. Make sure you dont get it on any coloured hairs and if you do just use a damp rag to wipe off.

Wow! Thanks for sharing . I never knew about the lemon part on whites. You can also put baby powder on to substitue the cornstarch . I would be very careful with silicone products though. I try to use them only when I have to. Show Sheen really works, so I only really use it for shows. Silicone is the stuff that people put in new shoes to keep them dry, so...it can do the same to coats. Absorbine does however have another product that is pretty new that is a 5 in 1 and I've heard that it is silicone-free and absolutely fabulous.

Giving your horse a bath dries out their hooves? I thought that leaving your horse's hooves in a puddle or something could get them softer? It does for a horse here at the barn--that's why they have to refrain from bathing him, even when it's really hot out (they sponge him down) because the water makes his feet extremely soft and mushy/crumbly.

Clipping white markings a week before the show gets rid of all stained hair and leaves them BRILLIANTLY white for show day. Use #10 blades.

Do a hot oil treatment (the brand ultra makes a horse one) the night before a show... soooooo shiny....!!!

Eqyss products for everything.

That's all I can think of for now....

oh and vinegar will help whiten stained tails. Soak it in it for a while...
