I'd suggest you start by locating a good trainer to help guide you. Training a youngster without guidance and without proper experience is not a good idea. It's better to start off on the right foot than to have to come back later and correct training that went bad.

i started off in a similar situation as you when i was given my horse murphy at 7 months not really having any other experience training a horse that was barely halter broke. i took it slow just started with getting to know him and letting him trust me by just spending time with him at his hay feeder petting him and such little things that build trust. after that he had some separation issues from his brother which i worked on slowly and the more he came to trust me the less he needed his brother. i was very much determined to work with him without a trainer to do it for me and it was a great experience he is now almost 3 years old and inseparable from me he knows all the basic commands stands, loads, ties, bathes, clips has had some riding time all with great success he is also learning tricks just a little something extra to show off his personality and is very much bomb proof. although i would not hesitate to ask questions when i needed i insisted on doing the work myself. you learn alot by training your own horse it really is a great experience as long as you have an experienced person like i had my barn owner to ask questions and are not exactly shy around horses and have common sense you should be fine good luck
