Dustilovehorses welcome to the forum.

Please do not think I am about to pick on you personally or am attacking anyone's beliefs by what I'm about to say because this is not aimed at anyone personally.

I have to ask myself a VERY important question before I'll sign ANY kind of petition ever... WHERE are the FACTS listed to back up the information I'm being given. This Petition lists on the front page that the horses in the US that are going for slaughter are NOT going for animal food or 'too feed the masses' but only being sold as a delicacy at $20 a lb in Europe and Japan. OK fine, show me links and reports to support this information upfront on the website please.

ALSO it states horses have not been eaten in the US nor Cats or Dogs... First I have to say I'm not someone who wants to eat my dogs BUT in many cultures that is a perfectly acceptable thing to do, same with cats, and cats and dogs ARE slaughtered and eaten in certain ethic groups here in the US, so the website is a bit misleading at best in that information. SECONDLY, until VERY recently (with in the past 30 years) Horsemeat WAS available via the local butcher and/or Grocery store. I can remember horsemeat in the market when I was a very young girl in the 70's and my dad being mean and telling me we were going to have to buy it because it was all we could afford. Many, MANY poor folk ate horsemeat because that was affordable.

IF you're going to sign a petition for anything ask yourself how honest and accurate the information they're providing is, or is it all just sensationalism?

I personally don't want to eat horsemeat and I am not one who would want to send my horse off to slaughter BUT slaughter can be a more humane option for some horses then years of negelct and abuse, IMO.

Another thing about online petition signatures, they're not valid unless you 18 and a registered voter for a specific area. Just something to think about. When you put your personal info down on something like online this you're leaving yourself open for all kinds of mis-appropriate use of that information.

Just carefully read any petition you're ever asked to sign and look for BOTH sides of the story before doing so... SOMETIMES what seems like a good idea on the surface, has dangerous legislation attached to it underneath. Remember there are alot of people out there who want to take away your rights to OWN and KEEP animals of all sorts and they use many seemingly 'good' legislative tactics to do so... We all think PUPPY MILLS are a bad thing, and it seems that legislation to eliminate them would be good BUT the problem is that there is always fine print attached that would restrict and punish RESPONSIBLE, CARING breeders, so you have to pay sharp attention to this type of stuff.

Banning slaughter today, breeding tomorrow, ownership the next day. Something to think about anyway.

I will not be signing. As wyldterv stated there are two sides to the argument. I am not for the consumption of horse meat but I also think about what would happen to the unwanted horses that cannot be rehomed for various reasons. Welcome to the forum though

Woo go Wyld!! I tottally argree!! I love horses and probably wouldn't eat horse meat, and wouldn't send mine to the slaughter house but I didn't sign. Just for my own beliefs. Things like this lead to other things such as making trailering horses illegal etc. I also found a lot of that information to be false. They don't use a nail gun!! That's rediculous. It wouldn't work. Its called a bolt gun I believe. It's quick and instant. Anyway, I would sign a petition to improve conditions inside slaughter houses and shipping etc.. But not to ban it. If it is banned people will simply ship the horses to canada or Mexico, forcing them to endure longer times in the trailers and often times unregulated slaughtering conditions. JMHO

I did a whole report on slaughterhouses earlier in the year and was considering posting something like this...in fact, I think I will in a bit. People need to voice their opinion and I commend you, dustilovehorses, for bringing this to attention, but more info needs to be given. This is a serious topic and I don't think people are well enough educated on it.
