Help Needed Once more...

Ok I need two things... Young horse feed suggestions ( I need Names) and suppliment suggestion (again I need names)

Second thing is help diagnosing this...

Ok I have a BAAAAD feeling my yearling has Rain rot. First of all what causes it? he has a dull coat and isnt in spectacular shape, so he may be succeptable to anything. it appeared at first like tiny warts/bumps all over (heavy on his side/hip area. his shoulder and a spot on his neck.) otherwise they arent any where else. well in one spot its balding a little as these 'warts' fall off. in the other areas its thinning his coat but not causing balding. when i pull it off its about 5-7 hairs clumped together on a chunk of skin/wart. what has he got? is it contagous and what will cure it? I was told that a cheap atheletes foot powder will cure rain rot (if thats what it is). Ive seen youngsters have warts on their noses but not on the body and he doesnt have any on his nose. also the one spot on his neck itches. perhapse a reaction to bug bites? he's a grey so is it a skin problem? please help! thanks in advance.

Sounds like rain rot to me, in which case I've found MTG to be excellent with. Eqyss also has something out that's a bit more expensive but I've heard it works well.

You might want to look at Ration balancers, there's a reference thread that's a sticky. I was thinking something like Gro-n-win from the Buckeye line-that'll give him all the nutrients he needs and you can add your own fat sources from things like BOSS, ricebran, etc. and that'll help with his coat. The feed experts here can give you some help on what to feed to help his immune system-I like Source as a mineral supplement-but they also have antioxidants like grape seed extract, bee pollen, etc.

I second the ration balancer with added fat/calorie sources if needed. Our yearling is on 2.5 lbs ration balancer, 1 lb oats, and Source and thriving.

I have had good luck with iodine on rain rot spots. MTG works, too. Also, an iodine shampoo bath is good.

It is contagious...don't use the same brushes/combs, blankets, etc. on another horse. Clean and disinfect the ones you use on him.

Not hijack the thread, but how possible is rain rot in drought conditions? We have a mare that has a rash on her lower legs (all 4), shoulders, some spots on her neck and several on her jaw. Her body hair is slick already and we shaved the tufty hair off her legs and have been applying MTG daily which seems to help some, but if just one day goes by without putting it on there it seems like it gets worse and even spreads more. Also, she is out with 4 other mares all day everyday and none of them are affected.

Encysted Strongyles cause a dull coat among other poor condition symptoms. Ivermectrin does NOT kill the encysted worms only Quest (or Combo-care) or a Panacur Power Pac kills those.

Ok...Jumpthemoon are there any other sypmptoms. cause he lacks any kind of gut no worms etc in the poop. his teeth need some dentist fixing. (i put my fingers in his mouth and he has high points) Hopefully I can get him in with the dentist before he comes otherwise I have to wait till spring before he comes back up here.

Im thinking of mixing alfalfa with his normal hay rations (approx 25lbs per day) im thinking one flake per morning and night. he get a omelene mixed with his nutrena Youth (because he hates the nutrena youth but with the Omealen he will eat it, and the youth is the highest in protene and many other things in comparison to safe choice and purina youth feed. I tried honey but he dont like that either.
