I pull my horse mane, I find it easier to get it even, and it looks better.

I like my mane to be 4 inches long...so if your mane is still longer than that, I would let it grow for a week or too, and then pull it to even everything out. The only reason why I would ever cut a mane is because it is too long to pull ( I will cut it, and then pull it) or on a young horse that hasnt had the mane pulled yet. But if you dont feel comfortable pulling the mane, use a comb to pull the hair down and make it even all the way across (while cutting) or you can point the scissors upward and trim the hairs..or take a pair of clipper blades to the uneven parts to make it even.

We pull it by shampooing and conditioning it, brushing it until it is untangled, then get something shaped like a pencil, and take about 10 strands of hair and yank them out, dont worry, it doesnt hurt them. But yeah...don't do it all in one spot your your horse will be bald...ahem..hehe yeah hope i helped

I would band the mane first, then see even it out by trimming the ends.
