But banamine doesn't "fix" a colic. It reduces symptoms but doesn't do anything for the underlying cause. So giving banamine can mask the signs of a serious colic and lead to delay of correct diagnosis and treatment--which can lead to death. http://www.horse-previews.com/1196ar...vetcorner.html http://osuextra.okstate.edu/pdfs/F-3921web.pdf http://www.extension.umn.edu/horse/c...eets/colic.htm http://www.acvs.org/AnimalOwners/Hea...eTopics/Colic/

So, why is Banamine also the very first thing the vets do, and many suggest you give them some while you are waiting for the vet to arrive. i will never be without banamine on hand at home, and will give it IV when i have a horse that is uncomfortable. of course I use common sense and if they are showing signs of anymore more than a mild tummy ache, i get the vet out ASAP.

JBR is exactly right. Once the vet has done an initial assessment he/she will give banamine to help make your horse more comfortable. But your vet will also deal with hydration at the same time by giving IV fluids and/or water via nasogastric tube.

Hopefully, no news is good news. I watched a horse die right in front of my eyes from a severe colic and it is something I NEVER want to see again.
