But banamine doesn't "fix" a colic. It reduces symptoms but doesn't do anything for the underlying cause. So giving banamine can mask the signs of a serious colic and lead to delay of correct diagnosis and treatment--which can lead to death.

So, why is Banamine also the very first thing the vets do, and many suggest you give them some while you are waiting for the vet to arrive.

i will never be without banamine on hand at home, and will give it IV when i have a horse that is uncomfortable. of course I use common sense and if they are showing signs of anymore more than a mild tummy ache, i get the vet out ASAP.

Because at that point the vet has some idea of what the horse's condition is. They should be asking questions to get some reasonable insight into the horse's hydration status.

JBR is exactly right. Once the vet has done an initial assessment he/she will give banamine to help make your horse more comfortable. But your vet will also deal with hydration at the same time by giving IV fluids and/or water via nasogastric tube.

Hopefully, no news is good news. I watched a horse die right in front of my eyes from a severe colic and it is something I NEVER want to see again.

Im very sorry to reply so late, but bad news my horse died, i called the vet out and she said that my horse has a 99.9% chance of dying cause the colic was so severe. i walked the horse all night and didnt get on wink of sleep and i walked him the whole day after dat and at the end of that day he died. my sister and mom was crying cause that horse was our first horse and he was the trainest of all my horses. but thanks so much for all the help everybody provided. this is the best site ever.
