![]() | On March 4 2005, my husband and I went out to supper with family and friends. We left about 6:30 and got back about 10:30pm. When we came back this is what happened? 1.) We were told our cow was out. 2.) Drove the golf cart to the barn, feedroom door wide open. (We always shut, and there isn't any entry for an animal to get in there. 3.) When backing out our headlights flashed over to the pasture (separate from the cow) and I saw my horse lying on the ground. 4.) I rushed over and found him dead. 5.) No sign of colic, no sweating, no rolling, no nothing, just dead. 6.) We rolled him over to see if there was a gun shot wound, none. 7.) No swelling, contusions, struggling, nothing. 8.) I looked in his mouth; the top of his tongue was dark forest green. 9.) I looked in his nose, saw nothing. 10.) He would have been 4 years old this April. 11.) No change in his feed. 12.) No change in his activities. 13.) He had a stall, that opened up to a 1 acre pasture, with grass. 14.) I feed him pellets, 12% protein, with an 8% fat. 15.) I also gave him coastal hay with his feeding, twice a day. 16.) He was a registered quarter horse, out of Obvious Conclusion. 17.) Yes, he carried the HYPP gene, but only 1/2, NH not HH, he never had any symptoms. I have had him since a yearling. 18.) It was about 12 midnight, and we decided to bury him in the morning, but the next morning, there was a small pool of blood, which had come from his nose. 19.) The next morning we found how the cow got out, the fence was cut. 20.) So this put a new light on things. A.) The fence was cut, my horse was dead, with no real signs, except a dark forest green color on the top of his tongue, and blood that came out of his nose over night. B.) The feed door was open, and we were only gone about 3 hours, and my horse had just died, he was still warm when I found him. My husband doesn't think anyone would kill our horse, it was just accident that someone did cut our fence, and the horse dying in the same period of time. But I can't get over the feedroom door being open, a young horse dying for no apparent reason, and the top of his tongue was a dark forest green. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME AN EXPLANATION AS TO WHY MY HORSE DIED, OR HOW MY HORSE DIED? I can't get over the feeling that someone might have poisoned my horse. I did file a police report and I was also thinking of offering a reward to the person who could provide the information leading to the arrest, of the person who might have done this to my baby. 3/11/05 I have rec'vd many responses from people I don't even know and I just want to say thank you so very very much. I means a lot to me! At first I said I would never buy another horse, even though I have had horses since I was 12. My close friends tell be to get another horse to help fill the loss. I went by the feed store today, and there was an ad for a 6 year old quarter gelding. 16.2 chestnut, three white stockings and a blaze. He had very simular breeding to my "Clue", and the worst part was his barn name was "Clue" too. At first I wanted to go see him right away, then I also noticed that he hadn't been tested for HYPP yet. That would be a must! I sure don't want to go through this again, if "Clue" did die because of HYPP. Another thought I had today, my stall for Clue was painted with dark green paint about 1/2 way down and white on the top 1/2. It was lined in 3/4 inch tongue and grove plywood. I did notice that he had chewed on some of the edges. The stall was painted about 5 years ago too. Could this have cause his tonge to be green on top? Last edited by tplaster; 03-11-2005 at 03:28 PM. Just to be safe, maybe throw away the feed in the feed room, or at least have some one test it!! I don't know of any drug that would work that fast that could have been added to the feed, but ya never know!!

I sounds like he had a heart attack....if you want to be sure, do get an autopsy... Thats just awful, I feel so bad for you.

That really is terrible. Sounds like a possible poisoning maybe, blood from the nose could have been internal bleeding from some type of poison? I know that some rat poisons are green. I'm so sorry about your loss |

Could the green simply have been from eating grass? I know Meteor's tongue will be that color after eating grass for a little while. If the vet doesn't have any ideas and if you can afford it, I'd definitely have a necropsy done to try and figure out what happened. That way, if it's something that was preventable, you'll know about it and be able to make the necessary changes before getting another horse.

I would take a closer look at his HYPP status. Doesnt matter if he never showed any symptoms or not. I have seen a 7 year old N/H horse, showed no symptoms his entire life, drop because of a severe attack. Very sad. I am so sorry for your loss, and now questions resulting from it. Have you thought about having a necropsy done, or is it too late? If your fence wascut, I would go ahead and file a police report, leave a paper trail.

I did file a police report and I was thinking of offering a reward for any information leading to the arrest of someone possibly doing this.

Well, getting a necropsy would help identify at least HOW your boy died...if it was from natural causes, a reward may not be necessary. Ruling out foul play would be my first step Quote:
