![]() | Help - my draft pulls away on the lead line
I have a four year old perch gelding that loves to pull away from me when we are leading ....once we are working and joined up, no worries, but that initial going from the paddock to the arena is a constant battle any suggestions? I am considering the stud chain, the be-nice halter (waiting to see if they sell it in a draft size) and any other option that may be available |

have you tried carrying a longer crop to tap him while your walking to encourage forward movement?

If he's bolting, then put a chain on him. Every time he gets away, the behavior is reinforced. Do acclimate him to the chain in an enclosed area where he cannot get away, so he understands its purpose. Make sure you fasten it so that it's not active when you don't want it to be.

Personally what I would do.... and this may not work for you but it has worked for me in the past with a half draft... Virginia (the half draft) can sometimes forget how big she is and start dragging people around. What i did was put a chain on her and got a whip. I gave her plenty of slack to start (enough so that it drooped) and when that line started to even remotely tighten up, i yanked back on her and quickly got in front of her with the whip. i did not give her enough time to get out of control. In horse terms, I basically told her "NO MA'AM! I am still on the other end of this line and you will NOT walk ahead of me." I even made her back up a few steps to show her that i didn't care where she was going, we were going when i told her we could go and she would walk in a respectful manner. IDK if your horse is just tugging or actually taking off, but if it's just a pulling issue then hopefully this will help. |
