Exclamation HELP!! mom kicks baby(?)

Hey everyone! As you should all know by now I have a 4 week old filly. Well, I have noticed for the past week that Sadie (the mom) would pick up her back leg some of the time when Bella would go to eat like she was going to kick her. I figured Bella might be bitting while sucking. Well today Sadie kicked bella (full cow kick) while Bella was just standing beside her. Is this normal? I have never had a foal before so I do not have a clue. Mom was very protective of her for the first week or so but seems to be letting her guard down around us now but I do not like her kicking at her own baby. Please Help. What do I need to do or is this normal behaviour for horses?

Some mares do that. Our mare Bliss always did that when she was in heat. She could also be sore or annoyed though!

How do I check the bag without getting kicked myself? I am having a hard time with this, it makes me so mad!! I called the emerg. number for my vet and they said mom might be trying to wean early. I hope not! They said that on Monday I need to get some Jr. feed and start feeding her.

just gently stand by her flank and stick your hand up there and just touch and gently squeeze if she shows any signs of discomfort then she is sore.

I was just out there with them and she was fine. Go figure. I do think she is sore though, when Bella is nursing, Sadie sucks her belly in like it's very uncomfortable! Hopefuly it will pass..

most of the time they are discplining our foal once sucked while she was eating her grain and she belted him one and he kicked her back so she kicked him harder and he waited paitently for her to be done he may be nursing at the wrong times also and getting her upset we had a mini with a foal and he could only suckle and certain times of the day so mares are funny that way
