Question ****Help, I need to learn how to do Halter & Showmanship****

Dawn is still for sale..... and I'm fitting to take her to a show next month if she's still with me. I'm hoping to take her in showmanship and halter (80% color, 20% confo) I'm going to ask Amy or Kate to take her in a few ridden classes. Its not a hunter/jumper show, its an Open English and Western show, so I *think* these people may be more open to the idea of an Appaloosa! Anyway, I know there is kinda a lot to that Showmanship stuff...but what exactly do I need to practice between now and then? And what do you do in Halter?? Do you just stand there and make the horse look pretty? I really want her to do well, and I think she can with her good confo and great color...and if I get some ribbons on her she may be more appealing to a buyer!

hum, I have never shown halter or showmanship. Oh, wait, I have never shown a horse...

But I have helped people with showmanship. And yes, my belgian kinda gets it.

Halter:

Look Pretty
Stand square.

That is all I know

Showmanship, I would ask someone who has shown. Sorry, I am just babbling tonight...

This is a link to some videos that Belle4 posted a while ago. There is one on showmanship I know that was helpful and informative I thought.

Halter..do whatever YOU want (within reason), they're only looking at your horse.

Showmanship *sigh*...here we go again:

i assume your horse stands up square? Because she's an appy i think she has to be square in the front AND back (i could be wrong). First thing to work on is her stopping and setting up quickly. When you face her she CANNOT move. When you turn your shoulder to her, she MUST walk.

When you are walking,joggin,trotting...whatever, you want to be right behind her cheeck bone, and infront of her chest. If she's not there with you, make her walk up/trot up. Whatever speed you choose, whether its a fast or slow walk/trot, she HAS to keep up with you.

In the class, you'll typically walk in and jog on the rail into a line (head to tail). If you really want to make a good impression, have your horse standing square FACING the judge, waiting for him/her to ask you to come in the ring. You'll be by her side, ready to walk in. (most kids will just walk on in randomly)

ALWAYS watch the judge, Check back, make eye contact.

When your next in line to go up to the judge, be WAITING. look like your showing your mare. When the judge nodds, you nodd back *SMILE* and go to your horses side. Look, walk your mare up so her shoulders are in line with the judge and turn and PAUSE slightly LOOKING back at your mare to make sure she is straight. The judge only wants to see your horse walk up, not you so make sure she is straight with the judge. Walk up, set up and start your QUARTERS as the judge walks around.

As the judge walks around, keep eye contact. Check your horses feet to make sure she's on all of them (not resting a hoof) and make eye contact with the judge.

On your trot away (or walk away) Line your horse up with the judge again. She should be the only thing the judge sees. LOOK back as your trot away.

Line up again, and wait. DO NOT fiddle, the judges will usually look back to see whos paying attention and whos not. QUARTERS apply the whole class, so make sure your in the right one even on the rail.

GOOD LUCK! any questions, PM me.
