Maybe he was injured, thus early retirement??
What "grain" are you feeding him once a day? How much?
Can he be ridden??

If he's retired at 7 years old I'd assume it was due to an injury which ended his roping career?

Knowing the horse's limitations can help determine an exercise program.

What kind (brand) of "grain" is the horse on, and how much (weight in lbs)?

Grazing muzzle.

No grain - replace with a vit/min supplement or a ration balancer, your choice.

Then you go from there

i am able to ride him but you are correct he had a injury to his front knee. I feed him a coffe can of 10% sweet feed every day. He still has his spirit and loves to get out there and perform but has his limitations. he is just so fat

No grain. Grazing muzzle at least during the daylight hours. Possibly take it off at night. Vit/Mineral supplement. And exercise...within his means of course.
