HELP!! How do you get rid of a skunk???

I can hardly open my eyes. my poor kids are crying...A skunk must have made home under our house or something. The smell is horrific. If you open the front door the smell is not as bad. Same with the back door. But for some reason the house is rank...
I really don't know what to do. I have looked on line and nothing comes up. Only what to do if YOU or your animal has been sprayed.
Please does anyone know what to do...I have seen skunks out in the pasture before but they have never bothered us.

PS. This is not a joke...With all our joking these past few days I figure I better put that in...

We were actually joking about shampooing the furniture in tomato sauce...

It's as bad as cutting up onions. It is starting to get a little better. The kids have finally gone to sleep and it's 11:30pm here. SO at least their eyes are closed...

Is the smell over the whole house? I can't even imagine. Bleh! I had a dog that got sprayed once and that was terrible enough.

Is there no info on the net?? Maybe try calling a house cleaning service company tomorrow and see if they have any ideas? I don;t think anyone can come into the house because of the baby, right?

This might help:
Quote:
To neutralize or deodorize skunk spray, the chemicals in the secretion must be changed to a different type of molecule. Tomato juice does not work (see below for an explanation).

For pets that have been sprayed, bathe the animal in a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from drug store), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. After 5 minutes rinse the animal with water. Repeat if necessary. The mixture must be used after mixing and will not work if it is stored for any length of time. DO NOT STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER - it releases oxygen gas so it could break the container. This mixture may bleach the pet's hair. I have heard of one black Labrador retriever that was chocolate colored after this treatment. (Paul Krebaum's Recipe from Chemical & E ngineering News , October 18, 1993, p. 90).

Some additional tips. Do this outside so the volatile skunk spray does not contaminate your house. To remove residual skunk odor from your clothes and any towels or rags used in this clean up procedure, wash them with one cup of liquid laundry bleach per gallon of water.

For buildings, decks, etc., a solution of liquid laundry (Chlorox®) bleach (1 cup per gallon) will work. CAUTION - THIS MAY BLEACH THE BUILDINGS, DECKS, ETC. Try it on a small area if bleaching may be a problem. The bleach must come in contact with the spot where the secretion was sprayed Repeated applications may be necessary for large amounts of the skunk spray. DO NOT USE THIS ON PETS. It will not work for skunk spray that has drifted over a large area or is trapped in a house. Only time and adequate ventilation will help in this case.

Why tomato juice is believed to eliminate skunk odor. Bathing an animal in tomato juice seems to work because at high doses of skunk spray the human nose quits smelling the odor (olfactory fatigue). When this happens, the odor of tomato juice can easily be detected. A person suffering olfactory fatigue to skunk spray will swear that the skunk odor is gone and was neutralized by the tomato juice. Another person coming on the scene at this point will readily confirm that the skunk spray has not been neutralized by the tomato juice.

How to discourage skunks from living under you house or deck.
I have received many enquiries on how to get rid of skunks that are living under a deck or house. The easiest way is to put a light under the house or deck after the skunks have left for the night. When the skunks return before dawn they will be repelled by the light and will find another area to sleep.
Another site suggests:
Quote:
To eliminate odor, close all windows and doors and turn off ventilation. Boil white vinegar for a couple of hours. Open windows and turn on ventilation. When the vinegar smells dissipates, it should take the skunk musk with it. White vinegar can be sprayed under the house as well. It can be added to the wash and rinse cycle for washable clothing, curtains and linens. White vinegar can also be added to carpet shampooers and water to mop the floors

I feel for you..
We had this issue.
They were under out deck,
Which is not very high.

Got our Black Lab..
Twice !

We did leave the lights on..
But we also filled
"Wiffle" balls with Moth Balls.
and scattered them around the house..
The Wiffle balls keep the dogs away
from the Moth balls

The skunks moved out..
I guess they think Moth balls stink..

PS the best thing to get skunk
musk out of a dog is Massingal Douche..
one bottle to ten pounds of dog, it WORKS !

Good Luck!
Paula

Ugh Cyn thats rough. If you compost don't throw any meat out, it draws skunks. I hope you can get things breathable again soon.

Well, honestly, treating the inside of hte house won't do a darn thing if the chemical from the "spray" isn't there.

Call Animal Control or an Exterminator to remove the "skunk" from under your house. The nest is probably smack DAB in the middle of the foundation. Which is why the inside smells bad.

After they are removed, just open your windows and wait it out.

All the cleaning in the world won't do a darn thing, as the smell is UNDER your house, not in your house.
