Help-Gelding a Stud Colt

I just purchased a Paint mare with a 2 1/2 month old stud colt. At what age do you geld this colt? Is it better to have them gelded at a young age? Also, at what point do I seperate this colt from the mare? Could I put the colt in a round pen in the same pasture or do they need to be where they can't see each other? Thanks for any information.

i no its better to get a colt gelded sooner rather than later as it can cause problems if left to late also i think most people wean around 3-4 months!

an it would be better if you could put them apart so they cant see or hear each other as they will only try there hardest to get back together (even if it means injuring themselves)

it all depends, if you are looking for the "stud neck" wait until they are 2 or 3. but if he is hard to handle and you want to try to "calm him down" geld him as soon as possible. a lot of people keep studs studs b/c they want to breed. but you can cut him now if you want.

try to geld in the winter months. You don't really want to deal with the hassle of summer flys and gnats.. just a tip

very true that flys will attack that area, and it may get infected.

That stud neck dissappears even if you wait. If you don't have the room to have a stud colt, geld him as soon as the vet says you can. Weaning about 4 months at the earliest (my opinion) and if you can separate them until she is dry and can't hear each other, then that would be the best.

THough a slow weaning, as the mare dries up is less stressful. Basically, put the colt in the round pen for most of the day, then let them be together in the evenings, or vice versa. Then lengthen their time away until she's about dry, then send him away for a few weeks for final separation and she can dry up completely. Geld him during that time too. If you can.

Good Luck

Some people have their colts gelded as young as 6 months and wean between 4 and 6 months. Personally, I wouldn't wean and geld all at the same time. Too much stress on the little one.

Try not to wait too long until you get him gelded. My mom's bf had a stud who was so dangerous that their was no choice but to get him gelded. He was about five then, and where is veins were larger, he bled much, much more than I thought it was possible for a horse to bleed.

We had Shiloh cut when he was about 8 months old---before fly season. My poor husband had me make the appt. for when he was supposed to be at sea(for some reason, all the men in the neighborhood cringed at the thought of gelding). Unfortunately for him, he was home on sick leave when the gelding day came around. The vet not only had to geld but, also fix an umbilical hernia. The colt was flat on his back, the vet was operating, the tech was assisting, I had the horse's front feet and an IV bag on my shoulder and somebody had to hold his back feet up and open. Guess who got the nod----the very person who didn't want to be there at all. Got himself a birds-eye view. Every man in the neighborhood came over after to offer him a beer. I just laughed at him.
