| Full Member | Help for dry skin
What could I use to help add moisture back to Sierra's coat? She has really dry skin and I didn't notice much of a difference with the Skin-So-Soft or any shampoos/conditioners I used last year. I had tried giving her corn oil when I'm there, but the last time I added it to her grain, she wouldn't eat it and I had to throw it out, wash the feed bucket and give her fresh grain. I don't know if it was a freak incident or if she's becoming finicky about me adding things to her grain. I just don't know how to bring about the beautiful, shiny coat she should have.

try feeding whole sunflower seeds. great for the skin and coat and tasty as well. also brushing daily will help ecourage the skins natural oils develop. and try a full body conditioner to help bring back moisture.

Magic Hair Care -Ithink- has this awesome stuff you have to concentrate. It's orange and in a reasonably sized bottle. You spray it all over their coat and it helps their skin too It helped turn my minis hair from 'Fried Barbie' into 'Soft and Silky' and my QH doesnt have dander anymore either

I feed Flax Seed (ground) and MirraCoat (which is a fatty-acid coat supplement - I've never seen a horse who won't eat this - we used to give it to most of the horses in the barn) as well as a sqirt of corn oil (mostly to make it all stick to his grain, as he eats a pelleted feed). If you were feeding a lot of corn oil, she probably didn't like the tase. I know someone who had a horse that we used to give corn oil to (just a squirt into his feed) and then she wanted us to give him like 1/2-1 cup and he wouldn't touch it. I have had great results with my horse's coat since I've had him on Flax and Mirra-Coat. We use it on my friend's horses too who used to have problems with dry skin. Make sure that you are rinsing out ALL residue of the shampoos that you use - anything left behind can cause dry skin. Lacie's talking about Healthy Hair Care. I know people who SWEAR by that stuff

I just put a small amount of corn oil, not that much at all. I'll look into the flax seed, mirra coat and Healthy Hair Care. I haven't bathed her since last, oh, September I want to say. I've always spent a lot of time rinsing out after shampooing to make sure nothing was left. Thanks for the help.

While conditioners and sprays have their place, if you really have a dry skin/coat issue, then I think it's probably best if you work from the inside out.

Oh, I absolutely agree. I definitely plan on getting a supplement. I started looking at some things online. I do want to get something I can use while grooming as well though.

I would work with a supplement and get to the reatl problem instead of just using a coat spary. You can feed something like BOSS or veggie oil and it is a bit on the cheap side so thats nice. You could also try something like flax, or a supplement designed for coats specifically. Bathing/rinsing too much can cause the coat to loose a lot of its natural oils so you want to minimize it as much as possible. Also a lot of currying to help bring out the natural oils helps a lot.
