over the past week ive noticed that star has been losing alot of his hair, mainly on his neck. this morning i discovered one side of hisneck had got really really bad since i had sceen him last, the side his mane does not fall on, is half bald. it looks very simillar to rain scald, but idont think thats it, because we havent had any rain for about 2 -3 weeks and his hair only started falling out 4 - 5 days ago. what could be the cause of this?? there hasnt been any changes to his regular routine, no changes in his feed etc any suggestions to what could be the cause of this?? thanks!! Im not sure whats going on without seeing it, but it could be a bacterial or fungal issue.. Our gelding lost half his mane from stress on one occasion, but not body hair. Does he scratch it on anyhting? |

i havent seen him scratch his neck, only his face, which hes been doing ALOT over these past few days. i can try and get some pics of it tomorrow morning if that will help. also his mane and face are the only parts of his body were his hair hasnt started falling out, his necks the worse, the rest isnt any were near as bad. |

One of the signs of selenium toxicity is chronic loss of hair, especially in the mane and tail. Other signs are patchy sweating, blind staggers, colic, diarrhea, and increased heart and respiration rate, cracking of hooves around the coronary band, and occassionally hooves that shockingly slough off completely. Selenium levels fed to horses should be around 0.1 ppm and 0.3 ppm. Selenium toxicity can be worse than the effects of a deficiency.

we had just got a little yearling who had this problem, he had a pretty bad cause of fungus. poor little guy got called that to till we have him a name, i sounds just like what he had, it took about 10 days of cleaning twice daily, ill go out and see what the vet gave us to get it clean. it works pretty well. its quite common right now because of the humidity, and its spreads, we were told to keep him seperate from the other horses and to give him all his new things, wash his halter really good, preferably get a new one also for when the fungus is gone. i will go out in a bit and write down everything the vet gave us. hope it helps |

thanks ImAJumperBaby!! the vet was suposed to come out today and hav a look at him, but didnt get the chance (busy with calving). ive been washing him with an antibacteral shampoo daily since saturday, to see if that helps, but what ever it is, its spreading, he now has bald patches comming up on his face and chest. also he has started scraching ALOT! ive seperated him from my other horses (just to be on the safe side) and hav scrubed all his tack with disenfectant. before i washed him today i noticed the parts of his neck and chest with hair still has gone all flakey, it looks simmilar to dandraff (sp?) i got some pics of the worst part of his neck, ill upload them on to my comp and post them on here.

If it is fungal..you must wash his rug too. All your grooming supplies etc. Do any other horses have similar hair loss?
