Helmets

the other post made me curious. do all of you wear helmets? or just for some stuff. i never wear a helmet at home, the most i do is jump little things every now and then. when i took lessons we had to for jumping, so that was the only time i've worn them (except when i was little-then i did for cantering.)

The only time I didn't was showing Iesha saddleseat at Tri-State, I wore a derby. Sometimes I go sit on Iesha in her paddock bareback without one, but that's just cause I'm crazy/stupid, your pic, lol.

I would never ride Fancy without one...at least not till she's like 20 with manners, lol

Never ride without my helmet. Stuff can happen and you never know when, it can happen at a walk.

i have always ridden with a helmet, but that's because i've only ever ridden lesson horses, so it's a liability thing to make sure i don't get hurt. but when i get my own horses, assuming i trust the horse and feel very secure and safe with that horse, i probably won't wear a helmet. if i'm training a horse or riding one that's got a little wild streak or has a tendancy to be unpredictable, or it's a horse i don't know well, i will wear a helmet.

I have never seen a pic of u with a helmet on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol...

I do in shows and when I feel it is ness....sometimes when I break horses I wear one.

I know the risks. I do believe helmets are something juniors should have to wear (as is law in a few provinces in canada, at all public facilities and shows unless the show is overrulled by breed rules...i.e. Arabian circuit they do not have to wear one for western or english divisions, just hunter like the rest of us.)

A horse is a horse. The very best quite calm horse can be unpredictable. If you do have an accident and your head gets a severe knock, you are risking brain damage or even death. Your brain is like jello and a severe knock sends it flying, your skull stops but the brain keeps travelling. If you survive the accident the resulting brain injury can be very severe and affect you and those around you for the rest of your life. Why risk it?

because i've ridden for about 5 years and been thrown 3 times. one i landed flat on my back, didn't hit my head at all. another i got thrown into a wall against my side, and the third i fell on a jump and smacked my face into it. if i'm gonna get hurt by a horse, i'm gonna get hurt.

what i mean by "unpredictable" is a horse that i don't know very well, and i have no prior expirience with how they react to scary situations. different horses "spook" differently. i feel that if i'm on a horse that i know and trust and that horse knows and trusts me as well, and i have worked with that horse for a long time and am familiar with the way he reacts to scary situations, i feel that if i'm going to get hurt, a helmet isn't going to make a whole lot of difference.
