Every ride. It's like putting a top on every morning- I cant go without it.
I care about my future, My horse, My family way too much to do something stupid like that.

I found this thread really informative-

Basically, once you are brain damaged, you can never heal. You are brain damaged forever. You never get back what you have lost. There's a couple of horror stories on there too.

We could also die crossing the street...It is just a chance some people are willing to take.

I myself have never/will never wear a helmet.

Do you look both ways before you cross the street?

I sincerly hope you have done some research before you came to that decision and the resulting consequences of a head trauma.

horses are just that: animals. no matter how well they are trained or how old they are, they are still animals with instincts and unpredictable behavior. I've been thrown off my fair share of horses from the just broke 2 year old to the reliable 20 y/o trail horse to the just off the track nut case. Because of this i will always wear a helmet... it feels weird to ride without one, and its always better to be safe-a helmet in no way hinders your preformance, so why not wear one?

You know this wearing a helmet issue is just as bad as a breed bashing thread.

Wearing a helment IS a choice just like owning or NOT owning a certain breed of horse is a choice. Either way, a person MAKES that choice. People who don't agree with that choice should not bash the persons involved on the OTHER SIDE of the choice. I don't wear a helmet, I've made that choice on my own, I know the risks and I accept that, BUT I don't go around telling others that they should also not wear a helmet. I ride with a friend who ALWAYS wears a helment and neither of us says ANYTHING aginst the other for wearing or not wearing a helmet.

I've had THREE equine related head injuries and every single one would NOT have been prevented had I been actually wearing a helmet. Two of the Three injuries were 'ON the ground" injuries while only one was due to a fall off a horse. That fall was a slingshot chin first off the side of the horse and I landed CHIN first on a concreate pad. The helmet would not have prevented the chin and jaw injuries.

The Second head injury was a kick to the chin that also broke my nose and scraped my eyelid. A helmet would not have prevented the broken nose or the chin injury or even the resulting concussion from the brains being slammed against the back of my skull as my head snapped back.

The third Injury was another Kick to the head (different horse different location different situations). That resulted in 20 some stitches to my chin, two broken teeth and another mild concussion. A helmet would not have prevented that either.

Anyway I CHOOSE not to wear a helemt on a normal general basis although on really rare occasions I actually do put one one, but I think that attempting to FORCE people to wear a helment is a bad idea. Attempting to Bully people to wear a helmet is also a bad idea and finally calling people idiots or ignorant for NOT wearing a helmet is totally out of line.

I dont' tell other people what to do or not do. I'm not going to tell anyone that wearing a helmet is stupid or bad or what ever and in return I only ASK that no one tell me that NOT wearing a helment is stupid, bad or what ever. I know the risks when I get on a horse and it is MY decission alone it is NOT everyone's business what I do with MY life.
