Heaves...copd...I think my mini has this...

hes been exhaling like a seal ...some times..dry barky sound...no discharge from nose ..eyes alittle runny but not bad.....

Ive started to wet his food, try to keep dust down, and trying cough free...is there anything else I can do...hes lost quite abit of weight since I got him ,but that was the plan he was very over weight....yes called the vet and he will be out next week...but for now gave me some things to do...

My horse has a "spring" cough never has a runny nose, I give him Wind Aid before I do anything with him in which he may exert himself.
I find it just seems to help allevaite the hacking whether its from dusty dry conditions or sleeping in round bales, it certainly couldnt hurt.
I find its good for a horse to be able to "clean out his pipes" now & then lol
How old is your mini?
Is he turned out all the time? Thats also a good idea so hes not cluttered up around dust & such that will effect his breathing.

what is his diet?? what is the quality of your hay, is it dusty at all? do you wet his hay? if not, do that..that will help... and get him outside as much as possible..being in a stall where it could be dang dusy is not good at all.
**it sounds like you should do some allergy testing with the vet to find out what is making him cough... How long have you had him? did you get any info. from the previous owners about him coughing around spring time>

Horses get colds. I learned this last Fall. One had a runny nose, but the other two had coughs and watery eyes. Vet came out and said "They are fine, they have colds"

Learn something new everyday.

I looked up horse colds on-line then. I found colds are common in the Spring and the Fall.

I have a mare that I bought a week ago and found out today that she has horse emphazyma (sp?) she was running for a bit and after she stopped she couldn't seem to catch her breath, the next day she seemed worse, and when she exhaled her sides would shudder, so now I have to find something other then hay to feed her in the cold months because she can't eat hay.

I'm sorry to hear that! Do you think the seller knew?

I would like to think he didn't know because he is a really nice guy, and seemed more concerned with putting my kids with the best horse suited for them. but then I think the first time I ran her she started wheezing badly so how could he NOT notice this?
Can she still be ridden when we get this under control, or will she always wheeze like this after riding her?

How long does a horse usually suffer from a attack once you change their enviroment? She is off hay and out to pasture, it's been 2 days and no improvement yet. How long should I give it before I really get concerned?
