Cool Headset

My mare Ginger is giving me a problem with her headset. She acts like someone is pulling on her mouth, even when I'm riding on a loose rein. She throws her head up, and then won't bring it down. We have tried draw reins, she tries to bite them off. We have tried martingales, different bits, different bridles, and different saddles, but NOTHING works, not even practice. We sold her to my grandma for a year, and she wasn't riden but once a month. If this could have started this, she either knows she can get away with it, as she did with my grandma, or my grandma's hands were eritating her. I have no idea, but if probably would have gotten better. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks!!

Do you think maybe you could get rid of the gadgets and have her teeth, back, legs, checked, or check the way you ride, she might not like something youre doing.

When was the last time you had her teeth checked? If you haven't had them looked at in a while I would rule that out first.

She has her teeth done regularly. No, we don't use a tie down, because I ride english. She does it with everyone. She has nothing wrong with any part of her body.

what does your instructor say. it's probably your riding - not that it's bad!!! but there's just that little something that's maybe keeping her from being able to perform. remember that your working from behind...

First, rule out any pain problems. Maybe get an equine chiro out to help her body and maybe get her aligned or something.

If thats fine, try getting lessons. A trainer could tell you if you are doing something wrong and how to fix it. Good luck

I was having this problem with my horse. My trainer sugested a rhythm collector made by Richard Shrake. It costs about $40 to $50. It works great!!! It isn't like any other gadget that tries to hold her head down. It applies pressure to the poll when they try to hold their head down, and releases pressure when they lower it.

NO NO NO!!!! Even I, who ride English, know that tie-downs are NOT to tie a horse's head down!! At least from what I've learned on this forum, they're for barrel racing to give the horse something to brace on, if you will, around the turns. PLEASE do not tie your horse's head down. Draw reins are not to get a horse's head down either. They might work temporarily but that's just it: they're a quick fix.
