He lunges like a dream and rides like a nightmare....

Haha. KC used to be horrible to lunge... not consistent and not listening. Now i have him broke to lunge like a dream. He is consistent at the jog and is trained all by voice. His lope is "perfect" (well wonderful for a previously trained contest horse ) nice slow, picks up his shoulder and uses his hind end.
I would like to know how you guys would transfer that into the saddle. Because if i put a saddle on him and lunge he acts like he's being rode. Im pretty sure his motto is: "The faster you go, the sooner the lesson will be over" I just believe that since every time he had a saddle on he was supposed to go fast....
I would just like to here your thoughts on this, if you have any.
Thanks

Just a short comment: train him with tack the same way you trained him without. I would only work him in tack from this point.

If he's bad whenever he's wearing a saddle the saddle probably doesn't fit him.

"The faster you go, the sooner the lesson will be over"

That could be true but I would think if that were the case he would lunge without a saddle like that too.

My parents drove 200 hundred mile to get a saddle to properly fit him. Yes, that quote used to mean all the time but ive worked him to where he lunges fine but riding is not so fine. He just goes faster with his tack on. Ill just try to work him in tack now or start the lesson without and then add tack and maybe he'll understand that he should move the same way.

I would just like to say that KC did great tonight!!!!
First i lunged him with nothing on him, then I lunged him with a saddle and told him the same cues that I do when he doesn't have a saddle. When he was staying calm and collected... I got on. He loped tonight like a dream and listened and everything. Usually I don't even ask for anything more than a trot because I just loose control!!!!
Just thought id post this!!! It made me hopeful!

Glad he did so well for you! I agree that as long as he is comfortable in his tack, you should just put it on him all the time when he's being lunged, worked in-hand, or whatever. You can also teach him that when you wave the lunge line (move it up and down with some slack in it so it makes waves through the line), he should listen more and slow down. Couple it with a voice command like "Easy" to tell him that he should stay in the same gait, but relax and slow down.

You might also have his back checked for soreness, if you haven't already. If he used to just get run all the time when he was ridden, he might have some muscling or soreness problems that are making the saddle uncomfortable, even if it fits well.

Make sure everything fits. Then it's nothing but time. You can't rush anything you want to be done right.
