Hay *timothy or alfalfa*

Hey quick question ....I need to buy hay and I got a good deal on 65 lb bales but they are 65% timothy and 35 % alfalf. I usually feed 50/50 but is it ok to feed more timothy ? Both horses are a little over-weight anyways but does it give them enough nutrients to get through the winter ? Also I will supplemant a little bit of grain as well but not an awfull lot. Thanks guys.

Yes, they should be fine. Timothy is a good hay. You should be able to get through the winter fine with that. Jessie

Actually yeah. It takes about 20 pounds per 1000 lb horse. 20 lbs isnt as much as you think it is. Depending on the size of the flakes that about 4-5 flakes a day. Its got enough calcium and phos. It has enough protein too. Jessie

Totally agree. Timothy/Alfalfa mix is plenty. Alfalfa covers what Timothy doesn't have.

And if your horses are already overweight, then the lower alfalfa mix is perfect!!

Oh, by the way. You probably were not feeding 50/50 alfalfa to timothy before. If you go by "flake", you were feeding MORE alfalfa than timothy. Which, on horses you want to get to lose weight, you cut back the higher nutrient content one...which, of course is Alfalfa. Remember, you Always feed by weight (per pound or Kilogram) NOT by volume.
