Have you ever heard of........

Have you ever heard of a Nurse Mare Foal??

It is supposed to say... Dual State Equine Rescue.. at the bottom.

I know you guys can help--- in any way! Halters, lead ropes, a bucket... Anything. You can send a dollar or two or more, to their account, with their vet.. Help some poor foal make it through!

Many foals available for adoption, of many ages, and breeds!

Dont be afraid to call, the lady is soo sweet, and very knowledgeable! Pass this on... Not many people know about the life of a Nurse Mare Foal!

Not sure which slaughter houses are taking them. The ones in texas dont do babies.

And the TB owners I know, they send the foals along with momma. They don't want momma drying up during her time at the barn. And they don't "MILK" horses to keep them wet for the baby.

Before people get a bad taste in their mouth about nurse mares as a whole, I've listed some links below. Not to take away from the rescue, but for those that want to learn a bit more about them since they are below in this thread.

Thanks Jazzy for sending out the piece of information.

I have never heard of this before. Leaving a foal to die, so the mom can go to have a racehorse nurse on her.

Another reason I do not like the racing industry

This reminds me of the PMU foals in a way. Left to die.

another article.

If you make phone calls, you will find many nurse farms that do this procedure. They don't breed and kill the foal.

There are some nurse mares that have been able to actually take 2 foals every year without a problem.

From a business stand point, it is not cost effective to have a nurse mare while the mare goes away just for re-breeding. However, if they are taking the mare out of the program and putting her back to work, that has been common among sport horses from the articles I've been reading.

Nurse mares are used all over the place. From mares that die during birth to mares who refuse their foals completely. Some mares don't produce enough milk and a nurse mare is needed.

So before anyone gets a bad taste on Nurse Mares, do a bit of internet searching, call the Nurse Mare farms and ask questions. the ones I spoke to were more than happy to talk to me about who and why they use their mares as well as their process of getting a nurse mare.

The Chemical induction is becoming much more popular among Nurse Mare companies. There is less of a chance that they would lose their own mare during delivery, as well as they can plan better when lactation will occur.

If a nurse mare is ordered before birth, as some farms already have plans for one, they call ahead and they will syncronise a mare to their mare as close to the birthing date. Unfortunately, chemical induction doesn't produce colostrum, but the mare can at least sustain the foal past that first 24 hours.

Hey I completely understand why they do it... but the fact still remains in many places-- mostly KY.. They breed the mare to any stud (could be anything unregistered/registered.. breed--- doesnt matter) just so she foals and lactates.. Then the "USLESS TO THEM" foals can get thrown to the side and die. Well, this rescue is here to help. The lady goes to the farms- and the companys sometimes allow her to go in and take the foal.. These foals are so much different than regular foals, and can be weaned by two months, as they learn to bucket feed (milk, then solids). Anyone that wants a foal-- and does not have the mares- could easliy get in touch with the lady, and find the perfect one for them. She has several foals right now... and needs some donations, so I said I will help... So even if you cant spare money or tack... Save this pic, and in your forums or emails.. Paste the pic, and make it a link. or add the link below the pic...

That is helping-- bringing awareness to the situation!

Just like you- yesterday I had no clue what it was, until this wonderful lady called me and in 10 minutes thoughly expalined it to me... I plan on getting a few foals, but cannot afford it right now... So I am helping as much as I can...

CAN YOU HELP TOO??

She said they are going out of the country for slaughter!! I am not exactly sure where she is located-- Call and find out... She is great to talk to..
