Hat Shape for Halter

I have heard from a few people that hat shape is very important for showmanship and halter. What shape is the hat supposed to be? I just bought a new straw hat. How do I know if it is the right shape?

Just wondering...

I checked AQHA rule book. Didn't say anything about not being able to wear a straw hat. If anybody knows for sure I'd be interested either way.

Im not sure about other breeds, but for stock breeds the shape is flat in front with high sides, I think it's called the QH crease. Here is a picture:

Straw is ok for schooling, and small open shows, but in larger open and breed shows felt hats are in.

You don't have to have a hat with that much crease in the front of the brim. Out here, people go both ways.... straw and felt, basically going with straw in the summer and felt in the fall/winter.

A straw hat should be fine. I show APHA and I couldn't find a hat small enough so I bought a $12 kids hat. It worked just fine, and I did not look out of place. If you want to spend the money I understand you can get one shaped for your face. Just don't get a taco hat!

I agree that felt hats are very much in.. but that shape... omg! SInce when is that in style... I think its ugly personally and is not flattering in the least bit way. I have to get a large head size but have the brim cut down because the loarger brims look dumb on me. Shape wise... I dunno but I really don't like the QH crease lol.

The shape varies from person to person.

What looks good on one person looks HIDIOUS on another.

So crease it the way you feel makes you look AWESOME!

Judges care that you come out looking your best in showmanship. Not if you are following the latest fad.

That shape IS in style right now in the stock horse breed shows...I'm not saying that every single exhibitor has it but the majority do.
