More than likely. One of my family friends has some Africans that come over and buy and slaughter goats at her house. It's very, very ritualistic, and everything has to be done perfectly. And they really don't waste anything, either.

That is very interesting Tim. Thanks.

As far as the them being Jersey I can't say for sure. I've delievered feed up there with hubby before but never really looked at their cattle. However I do know the milk truck also goes up there a lot. So I'm guessing either Jersey or Holstein??

The Jersey looks like the cows from "the old country".

I'm going to look next time I'm up that way to see if it is Jerseys or not. But do they also use Holsteins as veal calves too?

The African Boer goat has grown into a big business here in the states.

Most defenitely. They are the major source here in the US for veal.

Holsteins are definitely used here in the states as a source of veal. There are more Holstein cows than any other dairy breed.

The ethnic market prefers the Jersey if given a choice, because they resemble the native cows from back home. Smaller, probably more lean and maybe a texture they are more accustom to.. Just a breed they seem more comfortable with.

I've seen Kosher Kills. They did some here not long ago and invited some professionals and I got to go with my vet.

It is an interesting process that is all Religious based.

If the animal's blood touches parts of itself, it is unclean

If the animal falls a certain way, it is unclean

there is so much to it.

The animal, after a throat slice, is unconcious within 10-15 seconds because it is a very rapid blood loss when done correctly.

Even if the animal calls out and makes noise, (pain) there is a religious bad behind it.

As for the animals not seeing the sun, I hadn't heard of that, but like Tim said, more likely a religious thing.

And if they have to travel from Ohio to New York, well, it's better anyways to travel at night. Much cooler.

Ok I was wrong about the sunlight thing. LOL!!!

The reason they want to keep them in the dark all the time (including hauling them in the dark) is because it prevents them from wanting to move around too much. The darkness keeps them down and dreary so to speak.
