Hard udder?

I was up at my neighbor's last night feeding his horses and noticed something weird. 2 of the 3 mares there have bigger udders like they've foaled before...

One of them - her's is soft and bouncy like... the other - her's feels almost hard as a rock. It doesn't seem to hurt her and it's not hot, so I don't think it's mastitis...

Is this common? Or is something wrong?

I almost thought she was pregnant, but her belly doesn't look like a baby belly at all...

I thought of that, but it's not hot and painful. I was able to stick my fingers up there and clean between her teats and she didn't flip out. With it being as hard as it was and how I had to push my fingers in there - if it was mastitis I think she would have kicked out

I had an old broodmare that had a hard udder like what your discribing...... She just always had milk seemed to be the only answer. I could milk her anytime of the year and walla..... I wouldnt think it was anything to serious. Maybe try and milk her to see if thats what she has.
