What happens when you get a foal that is not what you wanted??

I would be upset personally if I had a paint mare bred to a paint stallion only to end up with a grade foal....I am not saying that colour is the only thing that matters, but when you have specifically bred to get a nice coloured foal on the ground and then you get a solid, what would you do?
Same goes for getting a Smoky black when you wanted a bucksin.

Stallion owners: has this ever happened to you? has a mare owner ever came back to you and say they are dissapointed?
Or maybe you had a colt and not a filly, or vice versa....

What are your thoughts?

They're genetics that we can not always control. Unless everyone wants a Buckskin Tobiano and breed to a homozygous tobi/homozygous back stud, everyone is bound to be disappointed at some point. Shoot, we wanted a bay dun out of Blondie and Player. Got a Red Dun instead. Sure we were a little disappointed, being that both were black factored, but he's healthy and sweet. That, in the end is all someone shoudl really be worried about. Now, if you breed to a registered stud and they don't get their papers... yes I'd throw a fit if I met all the requirements to get the breeders certificate.

If someone wanted a guaranteed colored baby, they should have either done more research to guarantee it or simply gone out and purchased what they wanted.

Yes health is very important, I agree 100% with that. Also breeding two great conformationally sound horses together.
About the papers...I know someone who is stil waiting to register her filly of almost 3 years, and can't because the stallion owner hasn't done his side.

surely it would depend in the term of contract you have with the stallion owner when you go ahead an breed

some i woul dhave thought would have a guarantee of a coloured foal an if you dont get that then i would imagine you get another free breeding

if you dont have that guarantee in the contract i supose you would just have to be happy with what you got

But genetic testing and studies can only take you so far sometimes, point proven with Acme Acres, both horses she bred too were both black factored....chances were high for her to get the colour she wanted..but didn't. And I think she is pretty well versed in colour genetics......so I don't think lack of research was her "problem"...not everyone can go out and buy the foal or horse they want, not saying I wouldn't do it if the oportunity came up and the price was right, but sometimes it is very expensive. I would love to have a dilute warmblood or TB, but too expensive for myself.

Notice I said GUARANTEED colored baby. She knew she wasn't guaranteed a bay dun, just that it was likely.

And to guarantee a dilute, you would breed to a double dilute. Case closed. You wouldn't breed to a single dilute and then be unhappy or start complaining that you didn't end up with your 'guaranteed' dilute baby b/c you're educated enough in genetics to understand that it would have only given you a 50/50 shot of a dilute baby. (if the dam isn't dilute)

it's not cased closed...I have a dark bay mare whom I would consider breeding to a dilute TB or WB.(and yes it would be double dilute) and she has a huge chance of throwing a smokey black. So no it is not case closed.

i wish i knew more about breeding horses so i could join in.

but if i bred my mare and didnt get what i expected i would still treat it as i would have the expected baby. i would train that horse get it sold to a promising owner and future and then breed agian to try and get what i wanted.

If someone was looking for a specific sex and color in a foal, they would be better off going out and buying that sex and colored for that they wanted then trying to breed for it because with genetics you take the chance on getting a solid foal unless homozygous or a different color then expected and definitley a different sex than wanted.
