I will hand feed treats to 3 of my 4 whenever I feel like it.

But I only hand feed treats to Jack when I am working on stretching exercises. He doesn't get nippy... but when treats are involved his eyes just kind of glaze over and you can see that all thought processes have been abruptly stopped. And all that is now computing is "CAAAARRRROOOOOOOT, CAAAAAAAARRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTT! "

I very, very, very rarely hand feed. Hand feeding encourages the horse to associate human hands with food, so they begin to expect that a hand reaching out towards their faces means something yummy... meaning biting.
