Post Hancocks....Info needed, please

Does anyone here have knowledge of the bloodline, Hancock. What I am actually looking for is information on Hancock studs. I was told the other day that most, not all, but most Hancock studs are "raunchy" in disposition. Even when breeding mares, most Hancock studs were very rough on the mares.

My lil guy is line bred Hancock on bottom and line bred Skipper on top. I have never had a horse with either of these blood lines, specially not a stud. Since we want to keep Roney a stud, I was kind of wanting to know what to expect. I know many things can effect the way a stud acts, but I am wanting to know if there is anything specifically noted on Hancocks.

Here's a copy of his pedigree.

Thank you in advance

I have never personally owned a Hancock horse, I know that Joe Hancock was race bred stallion that was enetered into the AQHA Hall OF Fame.

I have however worked with numerous Skipper bred horses and IMO, the sweetness of that line will cancel out any negativity of the hancock line, should there be any. I am a firm beleiver that *mean* hroses are not born, they are made wink Not much help here was I girl?? LOL
You also have to remember, that is one person's opinion, like many have them on different lines, Impressive, Zippo, etc. You could have just as easily talked with someone who had only good things to say on the Hancock line. wink

Wow...you must have gotten up with the chickens, lady wink LOL

Well I agree with a horse is not mean, for the most part. I was kind of confused by the statement that was made. Maybe I should have ask what I could have done with Roney with the bloodline he has? When you have time, take a look at his ped, (there's a link right to it) and give me yer opinion, please

I'll call ya here in a lil bit.
Love,

I believe that you will find the Hancock horses to be the best tempered horse line you can possibly come accross.

The Skipper W on the top side of your colts Ped. is very good. No junk there.

Hancock horses were and are so well thought of that there is now a registry dedicated to them.

The only knock I have heard was they were not 'hot' enough for modern horse competition.
That was from a cutter that wanted more TB in his horses.

I do know that for ranch work and looking for a line that will give you 20 miles and not stay stove up in the stall for a week, Hancock is one of the best.

here maybe this link will be of some help for you
Joe Hancock AQHA Hall of Fame Stallion

Joe Hancock
Born 1923 or 1925 (records vary)

Sire: John Wilkens a son of Peter McCue
Dam: Hancock mare

Joe was 1/4 Percheron, his Dam was the result of
John Jackson Hancock breeding his Mundel mare to a registered
Percheron Stallion owned by Ralph Wilson. The Percheron Stallion
was 14.3 hands and about1100 pounds, not the draft type, but used
for riding and gathering cattle.

Many benefits are attributed to the Percheron cross, strength in
stature, bone, a good appetite, he was known to eat all his stall
bedding on more than one occasion. I notice my hancocks carry on
this great bone and yes they are easy keepers eating what is available
In bad hay years this is nice as they eat what is available.
Calmness and disposition were also added.

It is interesting that after Joe was purchased by Joe David
Hancock, Joe was in the cutting harness and only a friend Tom Skinner
Saved Joe from being cut. Joe Hancock got his name because he needed
one to race with so was named after his owner.

Joe was open to the world for any distance from starting line to 3/8
of a mile, and won all but one of his 1/2 miles races.

Joe Hancock ran for at least six years and was then sold for $1000
during the depression and ending up being bought for $2000 by Tom
Burnett where Joe lived out his days on the 666/ Triangle Ranches.
He was put down on July 29, 1943.

Many ropers of today say that Joe Hancock was the greatest sire of rope
horses. Old time ropers say that Hancock horses are big stout, tough
and with good bone. Because they are so durable Hancock horses could
stand up to a lot of hauling.

Joe Hancock received recognition for his contribution to the quarter
horse industry in 1992 Joe Hancock was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame!

Hay Burner,

Thank you for taking the time to post that for me. That was very interesting. I am very familiar with the bloodlines, but I was so confused when they said that Hancock studs were "raunchy". Seems this person was sorely misinformed !

I still love reading about these foundation horses though. They truly were amazing.

Thank you again

Spoke with a friend of mine last night, she also had nothing but good to say about the Hancock line. Willing to please, and very laid back was what she told me. A lot of people just love this line. wink
