I have never heard of one??? but to me when weaning a foal it is more than just preventing them from nursing ...

Why would you use a halter? Separate them and its pretty much done. Do you have an old horse you can put in with the foal for company? Or a goat?

I have never heard of one before either.

When I weaned Opie he was separated from his mother. Works great...as long as you are set up for weaning a baby.

It is not something I would use but to each their own. Common sense could have prevented some of the problems they listed as reason to use their products.

The thing is, there is more to 'weaning' than just stopping the foal from nursing. They need to learn to be seperated from mother and be self confident.

I remember this from when heather made a post about it.

I agree it won't really do the job, but I've wondered if wearing it for a few weeks might physically wean them, and then if you separated them if the emotional weaning might be less traumatic. (?)

Regardless, I don't feel like my fences are safe to turn horses out haltered so it wouldn't be something I could experiment with.

Couldn't that cause problems with the mare if you wanted to breed her again? Like not wanting to nurse a foal that needs to be nursed still thinking she'll get poked? I don't really understand making the mare uncomfortable. IMO I don't think its really less stress either.

was just about to post what you said. Its all fine and dandy until mare decides she had enough and baby is positioned just so and it gets popped in the head by mom.hmm...or when you breed mare to fancy high end stallion, all excited for baby. Then baby tries to nurse and mare remembers last nursing baby and wont let baby nurse, then you are up every two hours bottle feeding baby...then what?

not to mention turning a weanling out with a halter on...not so good maybe. and you may say "oh but its a break away" yah kinda defeats the purpose when babys breakaway halter breaksaway, and it tries to nurse again, and nothing is poking mom so mom lets baby nurse...well that just wrecked everything.

IMO it is just easier to seperate baby and mom. And if you dont have the facilities to do that, ask a friend and ship mom over to their house for a month/board mom at a different barn for a month. And if you cant afford a months board you shouldnt be breeding....because you wont be able to afford raising a baby....JMO though.
