Halter showing question

My mom and I are planning on showing Cat and Felicity in a show in 2 weeks, and we thought we'd try a Halter class for mares for the experience. Buuut... we dont know what to do in it. This isnt a rated or breed show, just a small schooling show. So, whoever shows in Halter, could you please explain what we would be judged on?

Thanks a bunch!

Supposedly these things are based solely on conformation. But, judges also tend to be biased towards their idea of beautiful... See if you can talk to the judge who will be judging and ask what he/she is looking for.

I'm assuming that you are showing arabian halter? There are different types of halter classes and how you present the horse varies depending on breed....

Most of them do involve trotting the horse on a loose lead... That's all I can remember for now.

I dont know to much about halter but if it's anything like showmanship this is what I can tell you,.... Square up your horse in 3 seconds. Make sure your in the right square, never the same square as the judge. Keep your toes together and pointed towards your mares front foot that is closest to you. Keep your hands level as if your carrying tray.Always smile. Keep your horses head level. Correct anything the judge "messes up" but dont correct anything beyond the withers. If they ask you any questions give them an answer, even if you dont it and always say yes sir, no sir, ect. Theres a lot more but other members will cue you in on them

Halter classes at open show are usually seperated by stock type and pleasure type. Stock type being QH, paints, apps etc. and pleasure type being morgans, arabs, TWH etc. It is further broke down according to age and gender. You will be asked to lead your horse straight to the judge. As you approach the judge, he/she will step out of your way and then your are to trot by the judge. Usually the judge will want to see you round a corner at the trot on your way to the line up. In halter the horses are placed head to tail and depending on how many horses are in the class, there may be more than one line. The ring steward will direct you on where to stand you horse. During inspecton, the judge will walk up and down the rows of horses and look them over on both sides, front and back. You should have your horse set up according to your breed standards. I hope this helps.

Thanks, belle. There are only three Halter classes, one for yearlings, mares, and geldings/stallions.

Also, I heard that if your horse knows a trick, you should perform it during the inspection. Is this right?
