| Full Member | Fall babies take forever to shed out
From my experience, it takes forever for summer-fall foals to shed that first winter coat. Last year when I was working with a bunch of draft foals that had been born the may-aug before - it was june and we were still getting the last of their baby coat out. (the owner refused clipping). our weather here is so unpreddictable that i waited until last weekend, but then started clipping the foals thick coats. one mini i had brushed daily forever and each time had enouh left over for another horse! He still had 2" thick hair! I have found that it seems like foals that go into the winter with their foal coats seem to take forever to shed out. And their coat feels completely different than the foals that are born earlier in spring. Our belgie foal who was born in early april is shedding out faster and completely differently than the belgie filly who was born in October. Good luck. |

Thanks guys for your help. We worm her once a month with Ivermectrin but I think we will try some Equimax and see if that helps with the pot belly. She is very curly and kinky....does that happen with some horses/ponies or just in special breeds?

Nice little pony, but I agree with jumpthemoon, she could be a bit wormy, and she does look like she has the belly for it too - a little bloated. Some People have mentioned Cushings disease, and can effect horses of all ages, although it is more common in older horses - as are alot of alements. Symptoms associated with Cushings include uneven and strong hair growth coupled with moulting problems (i.e., a horse may not lose its winter coat in the spring and have a shaggy appearance). I would just get the vet out to give her the once over - better to be safe than sorry, then you can be happy that its just a slow malt or perminant curly hair :P - if it is that, i would give a full clip - esp in the hotter months xxx
