Hair Loss in face

Sierra's hair loss is expanding around her muzzle. My farrier decided it was probably an allergy. Any idea's? I dewormed her last month when it started happening, and have yet to do it again... so I better do that. But if I pinch the muzzle hair it comes right off like when you don't glue something all the way. I can't afford to get a vet out here, so that's outta the Q.

It started happening when you wormed her? If so, are you using a new brand of wormer maybe? She might be allergic to it if she started having this happen when you used it. If not the wormer has anything been changed in her diet? New hay, feed, vitamins, etc.? Like people, animals can be allergic to almost anything they say. Try to think of any new things that she was exposed to when this started happening.

She wasn't exposed to anything new... and this happened BEFORE I dewormed her. Then I dewormed her, for fear it was worms.

Hmmmm, maybe she is missing something in her diet then. A vitamin deficiency or something similar can cause sometimes hair loss, skin problems, etc. Not saying are neglecting her or anything of course; people and animal often develop problems when they never had any before. My grandmother developed an iron deficiency when she was 71; she had never had any problems before and they still are not sure of the source, as she had no other illnesses. They just prescribed her some supplements and she has been fine every since. I have heard of similar things with other pets, so that might be your horse’s problem.

shes the one that had eyes tearing wasnt she? if so then allergies would also make sense for her muzzle too- there isnt like new paint- or treated lumber around her ? run in shed or stall or something shes itching on or chewing on? It doesnt sound airborne -more like something shes had contact with unless its hay- round bale maybe shes eating and making a hole in it like they do-would explain the eyes too? just guessing here.Something you are putting on here that shes rubbing her nose on - front leg -linement-flyspray- if you find it you will prob have the eye watering fixed too.If you add oil to the feed and they eat it out of a deep bucket they can get the oil on thier face and after awhile the hair comes off the muzzle- found that out myself(the hard way)

DB- Yes, Sierra is also having the hair loss issue. No, there is no new paint, treated lumber, oil, or new anything she could have come into contact with. This happened about a month ago, both the eye tearing and hair loss. But the eyes are doing a bit better, actually. She has not -to my understanding- been exposed to anything new, other than around an hour a day I started letting her out into the other pasture to mow it down. But that was only a few days ago I started that, and nothing with her health has changed since then. My barn is VERY dusty, it is a run-in-stall that she has access to if she wants... but otherwise she's in the pasture 24/7. Could the dust be doing this? I ponder that, but the barn has always been like that. Also, Sierra doesn't chew or crib ANYTHING, so I know that's not it either. She did rub the bald spot against the fence, though, like it was a big itch. I gave her a bath yesterday, in hopes that that will clear her up a bit. And FYI, for everyone who asked if her eyes were read and swollen, they are not. They look perfectly fine besides the eyes tearing.

Some horses are allergic to cullinodes (no-see-em's) and will rub their face and chests bald. Try something like MTG or furacin on the area. Some Swat or a fly mask might help some.

ims i think has it- the dust in the barn could surely make her eyes tear- but the gnats would cause itching too and make the hair come off- like a flea allergy in dogs- the hair comes out because of reaction to the saliva from the bugbites. Is her under belly (centerline) raw or swollen? That usually happens if its the cullinoides too. MTG is good- keeps the gnats away too. watch it above her eyes -it smells like kerosene sort of- i hate the smell but so do the bugs!!

1. What is 'ims'?
2. No, she has no swells on her underbelly.
3. What is cullinoides?
