Hair growth, your opinion?

Yes, another thread for manes and tails. Obsessed, I know.

I know there are several takes on hair growth, and I want to hear them all.
Some say you should never brush manes and tails, and some say it's a necessity. Some will argue that no product will help to increase hair growth, and some swear by a certain favorite conditioner/solution. Some have said that braiding will help to keep hair protected, and some will never ever braid unless required to. So, what do you do? What do you use, what do you find works best? I'm not taking sides, just interested to see everyone's opinion.

Personally, I've tried everything from crochet knots to vet wrap for tails. I've ordered some 3 tube tail bags for 2 out of the 4 horses. I also love MTG. I'm a big fan of keeping tails conditioned and detangled, and any product that will assist me in that and is not detrimental to the hair itself, I will consider using.

oh, and btw....I know...

Shotgun sheets.
Quick2Skip is using tube socks and MTG.
And I believe huntseat uses vetwrap?

I hardly ever brush my horses tail, I only ever do it if we are going to a show and it looks really awful and i comb my horses mane every time i ride. My horse has a really thin tail and i don't want to pull out any hairs so i avoid brushes at all.

Joe has a real thick tail (when he's not scratching it off from sweet itch in summer) and his mane is just growing back from a roaching in Sept. I have also tried everything. I find, for him, good conditioner/detangler, NO BRAIDS, some Equyss or MTG (I prefer Equyss as it smells better and not oily). I comb his tail, not everytime. Braiding just made his tail break.

I never brush my horse's mane and tail, unless for a show, etc. When warm enough I try to wash every week or two. Now since its cold, I can't. I put MTG in about 2x a week. I don't know if it has helped with hair growth, but it does help with the itch and dandruff. I have a thread out right now showing my horse's growth results..take a look. And as for braiding, it depends on the horse. I have tried it with my horse, but since she is a constant roller it seems to just pull more hair out. When I bought my horse she had the thickest tail ever and that was because no one ever brushed it. Many people might spray detanglers or put gels in just to be able to brush it, but I think that it can make the hair weaker and brittle. My advice, use MTG and leave it alone.

Im going to add Shezabaydoc! lol

I am ordering one of Bailey Boots tail bags for Skip... I just want to see how much I like it and whether or not I should order one for our cremello mare.

I also NEVER touch my horses tails with Show sheen, I use a wide tooth comb to slowly comb through from the bottom up.

I also LOVE Eqyss Products for conditioning the hair itself...

I also dont wash the tail unless I absolutely have to. Otherwise it gets left alone all winter til the following spring when I have to wash it before a show.

I wash and condition every week to week and a half. I use Eqyss products which are awesome! They are great for the hair and make it smell and feel wonderful. I used MTG last winter and think it helped , but switched to mega-tek when I found that because MTG smells so bad. I used a tail bag or sock until recently I just got bailey boots tail bag. My geldings tail has grown 6 or 7 inches in the last few months , it leaves their tails so soft, shiny, and healthy!

I brush before oh, every third ride or so. I just hate having nasty tails. I have tried everything for growth since Fitz rubbed out part of his mane this summer, and I HATE MTG!!!!! It smells bad, it made his mane really flaky. Bad, like even when I bathed him to go to a show I was banding and I still was getting flakes! Just where I had put that stuff. Who knows, it may not work with his body chemistry. But I like Equyss stuff. I swear by that. Ever since I started using when I worked at State Line Tack. Anyway, thats my two cents!
