Had TONS of fun at the show today..NOT

Well let's start with yesterday, the schooling day. Fred is a 3yo percheronX, and a very talented one, and yesterday he ACTUALLY loaded fine, color me suprised! So, we weren't too worried. When we got to the show, we had to lunge him b.c he was a little hyper, and he DEFINITELY showed is butt. He was buckin on the lunge line and rearin and stuff, but when the person who was riding him got on him to school, he did fine, and got right down to work. So anyways, today when we were there, the girl who was riding him was schooling a couple of classes before hers in the outdoor arena. It had been raining so she had on a poncho. The poncho scared him half to death and he bolted..pure, uncontained gallop, with a few bucks..straight into another girl from my barn who was on her horse....then they both took off, and the Fred turned and the girl fell off, she was ok, just a little shaken.

THEN, about 10 minutes after the first fall, it was time for her class. Everything was going smoothly until the steward asked for a canter. He kept bucking and doing crowhops, i know crowhops arent HORRIBLE but the girl was a bit inexperienced and fell off. She cried for like an hour..her confidence was terribly shaken and now I feel responsible, even though I know I'm not..she also hurt her leg..

any ideas on calming him down at shows?

If they're just schooling shows, you could give him Quites in the morning with his grain. Also, try taking him to shows, but don't ride him. Just walk him around the grounds. Bring a chain shank so he doesn't tear your arm off. This will make him more comfortable. Also, remember that he's only 3, and he will get better with time. Most young horses are nervous at shows.

It was a State show, sadly.
