Yes, it needs a curb chain or strap attached to the two rings on the back (at the top). When on the horse, you should be able to fit 1 or 2 fingers between the horse's chin and the chain. Those are some long shanks, so be easy on it and be sure to neck rein and ride off seat/leg as much as possible.

If it doesn't have a chin strap then it does nothing (doesn't exert any pressure unless you have the shanks pulled all the way back at which time you would get nose pressure).

That particular make also has a chain noseband paired with very long shanks and is extremely harsh.

I use the same kind on my guy right now. He was broke using it b/c of issues with the bit and general bridling/haltering issues. He really likes it. I have tried all kind's of different bridles on him from bitless to recently I tried a snaffle bit. I will have his teeth floated over the next several weeks and try again with the bit but he seems happiest in that particular hackmore.

But back to the hackamore. There are several different kinds of them on the market. May I ask why you switched before I go on any further?

She just flat out isn't a bit horse. She does much better when I ride her in a halter so I was like I'll just get a hack soo that's the way I went.

I put fleece squishy over it so it doesn't rub, but yes I do know that the shanks are long. And I have to watch my hand. Thanks for your input !

My instructor uses a borrel(I can never spell it correctly or even pronounce it on good days). I am sure another user will come up with the correct spelling. It isn't as sever as the one you have. Pete is very responsive to the hackamore. If I put another bridle set up on him, he becomes aggitated and un-responsive but I take EXTREME CARE as not to jerk or stay on the reins. I am very consious of breaking his nose with too much heavy handness. Fitting a hackamore is a bit tougher than the bridle(at least for us) Pete prefers it up higher on the nose than lower. It should sit right where the cartlidge starts with the chin strap done up so two fingers fit in it. If your horse is really good in a halter I would try the other first(borrel, whatever the darn thing is called). It isn't sever and maybe all she needs. I use mine so sever b/c its my horse's prefrence. I am trying to get him so I can use a less sever head peice.

I think the word you are searching for is bosal, does it look like this? http://www.cowboyway.com/images/BosalCloseup1.jpg

If your horse goes well in a halter I would definitely look at a bosal over a hackamore. The one picture has the capability of being very harm while the bosal can be used with more pressure without causing the same pain. just something to consider
