Is this guy truely black? Or am I going crazy b/c I think hes brown..

I'm browsing through horse ads at a local trader's website and came across this gelding.

In his ad it states " Hes black but is papered as a bay"

I'm looking at his photo and going..isn't he brown?

His ad:

Yah got me! *shrugs* I think this one is brown. In full winter coat and not looking faded and I *still* see brown points, he's probably brown. I suspect he'll look even more brown in summer.

This thread from earlier this evening might interest you though it has a very different view since we only have winter photos of that horse and only summer photos of this one:
Black or brown? *GAH*

Yep, the back of his thigh, and his flank, make me think brown.

It would be really interesting to have this one tested.

Most true black horses are a bit faded somewhere. The ONLY accurate why to determine if a horse is truly black is to check his agouti statis.I think it's inappropriate to guess about someone else's horses on line.It would be best to contact the owner and ask if he's been DNA tested. If he hasn't been tested and you are interested in purchasing him you should offer to pay for the test - it is only $25. No one's eyes are a DNA probe .This forum is bad about discussing other people's horses as if we are the experts instead of discussing this with the horse's owner.

Actually, the ad says ' "Black", but papered as bay.' so I'm not sure they know for certain either.

I have a couple black mares here and the one that is EE actually sun fades around her edges during the summer and ends up looking a little like this guy. Actually, when I brought her home (she was a rescue) her diet had her looking like she was a really blackish bay, but after we got her healthy, she darkened up and that was when I got her tested to figure it out and was surprised she came back as an EE.

Also, he looks like he's getting fuzzy in that pic and his winter coat may come in darker or lighter than his normal coat.

I just realized something - Its amazing how we can spend pages of text arguing a points that we will probably never get a definitive answers to really resolve.

Horse Geek, while I respect your opinion I do not find it inappropriate.

Please do not start anything on my thread. Start your own thread somewhere else complaining about what people do on this forum.

Thank you

Just have to comment on this. Several of the people that post in the color threads ARE experts in colors. ACC and RiddleMeThis usually know what a color is at first glance. I know that they've been proven right before about colors (ie they "guessed" correctly after DNA tests came in).

Not to mention, if you know the genetics behind a horse, you DO know the genetics of a horse. Whether or not you've had a DNA test done.

For example, I know that my old mare was Ee a? Grgr (don't know the gray abbreviation), and her only foal was ee a? I know this because her dam was black, her sire was chestnut. The sire of the foal was ee Aa. I know that he was because he produced a bay colt out of a black mare. I know that my mare was hetero for gray because her dam produced a non-gray out of a chestnut.

You CAN figure these things out without a DNA test, which is NOT the end-all to horse colors.

Very often, discussing it with the owners will tell one nothing. I could call and ask this horse's owners what color he is, and they would have about the same chance of getting it right as I do sitting here looking at his photo. Not sure why talking to them about it is going to change anything.

If you think an owner is going to be upset because we're discussing their horse's color... wow. Interesting.

As others have said, some people can tell what color a horse is by their eyes alone with GREAT accuracy.
