Very often, discussing it with the owners will tell one nothing. I could call and ask this horse's owners what color he is, and they would have about the same chance of getting it right as I do sitting here looking at his photo. Not sure why talking to them about it is going to change anything.

As others have said, some people can tell what color a horse is by their eyes alone with GREAT accuracy.

yup and... Hes a professional horse trader and he makes more money when people talk about the horses he has up for sale. *shrugs*

This guy looks very much like my Mac. Mac was born looking very much like a bay colt, red body, black mane and tail with grayish legs. So he was registered as a bay. Most people think he is black when they see him. (Please ignore the man parts hanging and the bad hooves they were taken care of day after photo). This photo was taken late summer so he is kinda faded, but the brown in the flank and face shows well here.
