Guiness Beer for Anhydrosis and a trip to the liquor store

My horse quit sweating last Wednesday and I have been worried sick about him. I called the vet, he said get One AC and I immediately ordered it from Smart Pack and had it shipped 2nd day to get it quicker. I did a ton of research and I kept reading to give him a beer.

I tried to give him a Budweiser but Red is a tee totaler and the look on his face and his wrinkled up lip was hilarious. I tried it on his alfalfa. Red did not appreciate messing up perfectly good alfalfa with a beer!!!

I did more research and I kept hearing to make sure it was a Guiness Beer. I have put Guiness Beer logo's on groom's cakes and that is my extent of knowledge of Guiness Beer!! I went to the liquor store today and I am sure that lady thought I was full of bull and I should get some help for my "drinking problem". I asked if I could buy just one and explained it was for my horse and I didn't want to buy a 6 pack because I certainly wasn't sure he'd drink it and I don't drink beer! That wasn't going to happen but they did have a 4 pack of cans so I got that along with Everclear!!! I use Everclear to work on wedding cakes because it has such a high alcohol content it dries very quickly and doesn't melt the sugar!!!

I went to the barn...got a half a scoop of grain and took it to Red's paddock. He is up in a stall with fans during the day and turned out in the evening. Red is always ready for a meal and he actually ate it with the beer poured on it!! I was thrilled so Red will be getting a little extra meal everyday with a Guiness Beer poured on it! He former owner couldn't believe he had a beer because she had tried it before when he raced and he refused it.

I am hoping that the Guiness will jump start those cranky sweat glands. He was sweating some on his shoulder when I got there so I was thrilled.

Has anyone had success with the Guiness?

I've never used beer for anhydrosis but it has helped several of our broodmares in past years that were low on milk production after foaling. We always buy Miller and our mares absolutely loved it. I've never tried Guiness but another board I belong to has had several threads about it and they all swear by it. I hope your guy continues to like it, but if he gets burned out on the Guiness, try Miller's. I always poured it over the grain and let it soak for a few minutes.

He was in his stall with two fans so he wasn't sweating. He is losing some of his hair

He did eat his grain with his Guiness so that is a good thing. I have two more beers for him and I gave them to Edgar (he feeds the horses everyday and works around the ranch doing everything imaginable!) and ask him to give them to Red in the morning....Edgar asked if they were for him!!!

There is absolutely no evidence that beer (Guiness or otherwise) will help a horse start sweating again. Do not count on this to "cure" your horse-rather take the steps necessary to help keep your horse cool.

My horse is on One AC and electrolites. He is in a stall with two fans running on him so I am doing everything possible to help him. If a Guiness will help I will gladly give it to him. Some people have said they had success with it so it never hurts to try!
