ground work on mare in foal

I have a 4 yr old mare that I am currently trying to get in foal , should know in a couple weeks. I am just wondering if it is ok to "lightly start" her. She has had no ground work or anything done yet,she is very hyper and catty. would lunging be alright.

As long as there are you health issues I would think it would be fine..why are you trying to breed a mare that is not even started under saddle yet though? Are you going to keep the foal. I'm not trying to be mean or nasty I just want you to think about the horse market right now, in my opinion only horses that have true attributes should be being bred.

As long as you are not getting too rough with her, it will be okay to work her the day before she foals. My answer is yes, it is okay.

I am actually breeding my mare this year...we are waiting for her next heat cycle. Have you bred her yet? I talked with my vet today who specializes in reproduction. He said that when breeding a mare, you should wait 50-60 days after you've bred her in order to make sure she took and it looks like the egg implanted okay and is healthy. Then you can ride/compete until the third trimester, basically do whatever as long as you don't push them for something they are physically fit for.

Hope this helps, I am doing a lot of research on this b/c I plan on keeping my mare in training after the 60 days are up. I assume this includes lunging, but I could be wrong, probably wouldn't be a problem if you don't push her and keep it super light.
