Worst grooming tip I ever heard... using Raid as a fly repellant on your horse. And that was HERE!

In the winter, to help with the snowballs on the feets, I use Non-stick Pam, or used motor oil on the souls. I keep a can of used motor oil in the barn with a paint brush in it. I do it while they are eating, I never have to deal with snowballs this way. I have done this for over 35 years!

it goes without saying that brushing regularly no matter what you use is going to help keep the natural oils up and make the job easier- and I think a blanket for winter is must if you want grooming to go quicker and easier, but here are a couple of my personal faves (all used successfully)

- Alberto V05 hair conditioner for men (sold in the men's grooming section of the grocery store for about $3 a bottle) instead of baby oil and such for highlighting the face for shows- it doesn't cause sunburn and isn't as dirty feeling, but still gets you that rich shine.

- Listerine for dandruff in tails and manes, as well as rain rot AND I use this once a week on hooves- I just clean the hooves well (sometimes rinse them) and then spray listerine (1 part to 1 part water) in the hoof and leave them standing (hopfully in the stall aisle or somewhere where they aren't in mud). this prevents thrush and keeps the feet very healthy. I never have to use thrush x or other expensive antifungals.

- Supplement from the inside for coat and hooves- even if you can't afford expensive supplements get ground flax meal (essentially ground flax just more finely ground and cheaper than 'ground flax') in the grocery store and mix it 1:1 with wheat germ (ground) and give them 1/4- 1/2 cup of the mix each day- they will get so shiny. I have a friend who just uses corn oil but I've never tried that.

- don't bother with expensive horse shampoo- the best horse cleaner I have ever used is ivory dish soap- all natural and works great.

- I do use showsheen for shine in the show ring- I don't like any other brand

- I use shoepolish (specifically scuff magic black shoe dye) instead of hoof black. on a clean dry hoof it lasts just as long.

-cheap hair spray sprayed over mane then rub down the flyaways, and they stay down (white rain works well). it also works well to hold on glitter for parades and such

that's all I can think of for now.

but if you have a dog I have one more- use BLUE Dawn dish soap for bathing them- kills all fleas.

I wouldnt use the motor oil because it is toxic and causes cancer. You are not even sapposed to touch it.
