Well, whichever horses we're working through the winter (can't work them all daily) are blanketed to keep the hair short. We don't body clip because it's pretty danged cold up here and if the horse were to pull a blanket off he could stand in the wind, snow, and sub-frigid temps for hours before anybody noticed.

I am a total clipping freak - chin, legs, long hairs sticking out anywhere! I just shave off the long guard hairs in the areas the blanket isn't covering them.

I also keep the tails conditioned, braided and bagged so when I take them out they look great!

HalterGirl - I always loved Laser Sheen too until the lady at our local tack shop told me I was crazy! lol. She said that Show Sheen and Laser Sheen use silicone as a main ingredient and they cause more damage to the hair than they're worth. She told me she has internationally renoun riders in her store regularly and they've had in depth conversations about silicone on the coat and how it literally kills the hair more and more with each succesive application. eek!

Do you know anything about that?? I sure didn't!! I have no idea if she's right or not but I started using cowboy magic and love it for tails. I haven't used it on the body yet because its too cold to bathe.

Let me now what you've heard aobut it.

I've heard that show sheen doesn't condition but just makes it easy to comb out. It rips all of their hair out. anyone heard of Canter-mane and tail?

Salon Magic is my favorite. It is a mane and tail detangler by Ultra. I could not live without it when the horses come in to my barn all wild and wooly!

Don't get me started on shine products...
ANy product that alters the sweating situation is bad for the horse. If you spray a shine product on the horse, it is stopping the usual sweating situation.
So besides the fact that products that make them shiny, also cause them to stop sweating, they just coat the hair and do not allow moisture in, which drys out the hair and makes it brittle.

edited because I forgot to mention that another trick of mine is COWBOY MAGIC! I love it

I think you may have worded that a bit off because well cowboy magic is a shine product. You're right though about silicone, it dries the hair which in turn causes it to break and/or fall out over time. I have used silicone based products on my own hair and have experienced it first hand, lol. (No I didn't go bald, but my hair did get really thing before I figured it out.)

We've used Laser Sheen on our horses for eons, and they have the softest coats I've ever felt. People are always asking us how we keep them so soft and shiny. We are good friends with the people who have the Farnam company and we get Laser Sheen concentrate in big drums and then put it in smaller bottles and add the water. It's great! Now show sheen if applied daily will dry out the hair, so we only apply it to the coat after they've had a bath, and spray their tails good with it. So maybe it was just the "re*****d" riders own grooming practices and not the actual product that was causing the dry hair.
