Talking Grooming tips?

I was just wondering about a few grooming tips I have heard and what you guys use on your horses.
Here goes...
Instead of using show sheen you add baby oil to water?
Is it bad to clip the feelers?
For highlighting you use pertoleum jelly around the eyes add muzzle( vasaline)?
What else can you use to make your horses coat shinier ( not sweaty looking) without using show sheen?
What do you do with your horse for grooming?

Hope to here from you

well by "feelers" do you mean whiskers? If so no, they can be clipped.

I've never used Vaseline to hi-lite, I'd think that would be kinda goopy on their face. We use the Baby Oil gel to hi-lite.

As far as grooming routine, the horses are curried, vaccuumed, sprayed with Laser Sheen and brushed with a soft brush. Their mane and foretops are combed out and their eye and nose goobers are cleaned off with a damp towel. This is done everyday, and once a week they get a full bath. Otherwise after they are worked they are rinsed off or have sweat marks curried off really well and are sprayed and brushed again.

You shouldn't clip feelers, i never do. Sometimes I trim them if they grow to the extent that they get annoying to me and Dinah, but I still leave on at least an inch and a half.

You shouldn't use vasaline, it burns.

Bathing? Let the water dry then brush it off, looks nice. Tried it today

On usual days I just dandy brush her off [she lives out] pick out feet out, untangle her mane and tail, clean her eyes, nose and dock, then fly spray her. I may have missed something out there, but I think that's it.
After work I hose/sponge her off when she's sweaty, let her dry and brush her, pick out her feet, mane and tail and check her eyes and nose. Again, I may have missed something

I always clip the whiskers and all the long hairs under the jaw. Just lots of brushing and I use the grooma currys with the points to give a massage and really get down to the skin. All the horses loves it. They back into the grooma.

ok well i dont think vaseline burns cause it is used on blanket rubs...for shine i use baby wipes and a warm towel picks up dust as well too.
my grooming routine for a show is as follows: the normal brushes and hoof pick, wash the tail/show sheen it, spray on water and towel off, hot towel and stable rubber (this is after currying, dandying, bodying and all that) then for a ifnal coat polish i use baby wipes. but i also feed my horse a little bit of corn oil to make her coat naturally more shiny. I clip all the whiskers because the make the horse look old and i dont think they have any use for them anyways.

A wipe over the horse with a baby wipe or a clean soft cloth takes any extra dust off.

I've heard of people using vaseline also for hi-lighting. (sp?). Anways, I've never tried it - I don't get my horse that done up for shows. If it's warm, I'll give him a bath the day before - but its usually not so I just groom him like normal. I use a little face curry on his entire body - he hates the normal curries, he's very sensitive (tb). Then I brush his entire body with a soft brush and his face with a face brush. I'll use show sheen in his mane and tail so it's easier to brush through. I don't ever personally use show sheen anywhere else on the body - i've heard that its not good for the horse - something about pores and sweating (can't remember - long time ago - just remember it didn't sound good, sorry). I'll brush his mane and tail. I do cut off the whiskers around the nose and mouth - only before a show though. I usually never cut off the long "feelers" around his eyes though. Then of course I just pick out his hooves and take a stiff brush and get the dirt off the top of them.

Okay here are my thoughts/feelings to your questions:

Quote:

Personally, I wouldn't even think of trying this. That's just asking for every piece of dust in the world to gravitate to you horse and stay there *lol* I would never think of trying to find a home-made product to replace my show sheen - it just can't be done

Some peopler prefer to not clip the whiskers, especially if the horse lives outside. If you show, in my opinion, you should always clip your horses whiskers before a show... just gives a cleaner, more professional look...

Wouldn't try this one either. Petrolium jelly is thick and also collects dust. Also, if your horse gets sweaty, it can run into their eyes and cause them to burn (which is what I think Kizza was getting at). I use a light application of baby oil (the liquid seems to highlight better than the gel, although the gel is much easier to handle) I usually put sunscreen on my horse's nose first, since it is pink and I don't want to scortch it =P

Show Sheen is, by far, my favorite grooming product, although I only use it before a show or after a bath. I also use Miracle Coat Lusterizer/Conditioner, which contains Tea Tree evey so often. I like that too. And I use Vertolin Shine a coulple of times a week because it contains a sunscreen to help prevent bleaching. I don't always use a product... most of the time a good grooming brings out the shine that I drool over

Every day I curry him with a Lil' Grooma™ curry, and a Grooma™ Softouch curry on his face. Then I curry him with a jelly scrubber mit (LOVE THIS!!!). Then I use my "longbristle flicky brush" to flick the dirt off. Next is a stiff/dandy brush, followed by a swipe with a soft brush (usually my goat hair brush... softest brush I've ever seen... LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!) After I ride I usually hose him off. Once he's dry I curry him again and rub him off with a microfiber cloth or my sheepskin mit... wow... now that I read this... MAN my horse is spoiled *lol*

How does Vaseline burn? I've used it on myself and it's never burnt. Or are you saying while out in the sun it would cause sunburn. Ok, that makes sense. Answered my own question.
