Sponges and/or cloths for wiping eyes and noses
You can try a human hair brush with the wire bristles to brush manes and tail, they don't pull as much hair out.

In my grooming box, I have....
  • a rubber curry comb
  • a metal curry comb
  • a medium-hard brush
  • a soft finishing brush
  • couple of hoof picks
  • a bunch of rags and towels for whatever
  • face finishing brush
  • Corona ointment for minor cuts and scratches
  • Furall aerosol for other cuts and scrapes
  • Cowboy Magic Greenspot Remover
  • fly spray
  • Show Sheen
  • some anti-fungal/anti-bacterial spray for any rain rot or scurf that might show up
  • Epona All-Purpose grooming mitt <--AMAZING
  • sweat scraper
  • Mane and tail comb and brush
  • Love that Tail leave-in conditioner (I mix it with water for a spray-on detangler and conditioner)
  • braiding bands
  • jelly scrubber
There are more, I'm sure, but that's all I can think of right now.

The contests of my brush box include:
a regular curry
a plastic curry
a stiff brush
a soft brush
cowboy magic mane and tail
red horse shampoo
frizz-ease hair product (found that it works amazing for banding)
bands (clear, black and brown)
two combs
sissors
a hoof pick
baby wipes
fly spray
show sheen
no slip show sheen
and lots of hay that seems to accumulate.

As others have said

Hoof pick, hoof pick, hoof pick. Get a bunch of the cheap ones, and a few with a brush, that is one of the mos important things in your box.

I have a bunch, because I tend to lose them.

No hoof, no horse.

shedding blade-(metal currys) they are LIFE savers, and get loose hair and dried mud off, while the other side (no teeth) CAN be doubled as a hair squegee (sweat scraper)..... im in love with that item

A few linen towels for putting that final shine on your horse after you are done grooming, mine was bought at a tack shop, and it says stable rubber, it's just a linen towel...I have a bunch of old linen napkins, that I keep out there, and when they are all dirty I put them in the wash....also kitchen terry towels, and wash cloths, come in handy in your tack box....
