Well, today I went out to the stables to ride. In a previous post I talked about how my horse had suddenly started to want to run home, although in the first few rides he was fine. Well today I tried your suggestions and he did really well. Actually, today he didnt really try to run back. But I did notice somethings I did differently. In the trail rides that he was bad in, I just hopped on and went, or maybe free lunged first...but nothing much. But today, and the other times I went on trail rides I had worked him before. And also, I noticed that with me THINKING and expecting him to do something, rode him on too tight of a rein. He was in a headset the whole ride, and someone pointed that out to me, so today, even though I wanted to shorten my riens, I rode him on a long rien the whole ride. He was VERY GOOD. We went out for about 10 minutes, then came back...past the barn and went to home through the road, and went up the driveway, to change things up a bit. And he did really well even with cars speeding by him. So I was very happy. Even though he was good, I remembered what you guys said about working him afterwards, so I took him in the area and worked him at a trot and bit of canter for another 10 mintues, the walked him out circling the barn. I was so happy he was good! However, I still dont think that he will always walk home perfectly, I think he will still try it a few more times, so I will keep all your suggestions in mind! They were all great, thanks so much! Idk what I would do without the forum, thanks again!

you got day 1 accomplished and have the confidence to start on your way to happy returns from your ride. I'm sure not every day will be as pleasant but it's a process like everything and you are well on your way to taking care of the issue! Congrats on a good ride and return, always feels good to end on a good note! |

Yeah, you should really get him to the point that you don't need to work him first- eventually he'll start building up stamina and you'll have to start working him longer and longer and longer to get him to remain calm on the way home. Really work on correcting the problem- not getting the edge of before riding. Then you'll never have the problem completely solved. I'm so happy you had a good ride today- that's always an awesome feeling when you've been having trouble. |

Many congrats. Just keep him busy and work him hard at the barn and make things nice an easy while out of the trail. If he start to want to rush home, then start the hard work up and give him circles and yields and do this, and now do that, go over here, back over there. He will soon get it that it better to not rush home. Be consistant, patient, he will try it again, so be ready to put he to work. |
