Great Group

Hi! I'm from Florida, and I'm new too. New too horses, new to the board. I just bought a 3 year old Quarter Horse, they told me was green, but has been riden. Does that make sense? I have a few questions.

1. Jenny was nice enough to resize my picture for my avatar, but I still don't know how to get it to work. Any help would be appreciated.
2. I'd like to post some pictures of my horse, but it asks for my URL, and my pictures are kept in MGI photo's and don't have a URL. Is there some way to get around that?
3. I know I saw a discussion on giving a horse Bran, and whether to give it dry or wet, but I can't find it, and I want to show it to the person I board with. She gives it dry, and I thought the consecous was to give it wet.
4. Why do you have to give your horse Bran, and how often?
5. Living in Florida I am concerned with my girl getting overheated when I start to ride her. How can I tell when she's had enough? I'm going to ride her in the evenings when it's cooler.

A little about myself, I am 50 years young, have 5 kids, the youngest is 14. I have 8 dogs. Five pit bulls, 2 boxers, and a poodle. I work at the ranch to pay for my horse's boarding. It has also, been a great help in getting over my initial fear of horses. I just love them now, and although I'm not afraid anymore I have a great deal of respect for them. I try to read about horses for about 2 hours after I finish working on the ranch to learn as much as I can. I have found this forum a great place for knowledge. I'm starting riding lessons next week, and am very excited. The green rider and the green horse. We should make a great couple.

hi, welcome to the forum!!

1. go to usercp, and check the left hand column and click on something like change ataver or something...

2. u need to set up a picturetrail.com or webshots.com account to post pics(or at least at the old forum...not sure here)

3. it would prob be in health section or grooming(not sure) but look to the previous days post

4. not sure

5. i think if she starts sweating alot and acting tired and not responding to aids as normal (don't ride more than an 1.5hrs)

OK A green horse that has been ridden.

At 3 yr old i guess this horse is not long broken. It has been broken into saddle and bridle and basic schooling but that is probably it.
Excuse me asking - but do you actually know how to ride yet? you said you were starting lesons.
WHy did you buy a green horse?

That was me that resized your avatar photo. However, I'm not sure if Junior members have the ability to add an avatar. That should come available when you reach "full member".

Welcome

Good luck with the lessons, not ideal green horse, green rider, is there not something more mature?

I am going to do a search for the Bran topic, FEED IT DRY wow asking for trouble.

I only use Bran if a horse has colic, then one mash, soaking wet to help push everything through the gut.

Not a great fan of Bran, except for medicinal purposes.

NEVER FEED A LAMINITIC BRAN - alters the calcium - phosphorus ratio.

I will find the post and bump it up for you.

Jane

I work at a ranch so that when I found a horse my work would pay for its boarding. I have been working around her for a while and we just clicked. I can saddle her, bathe her, groom her, work on her feet, saddle her, and she follows me around like a puppy. I haven't ridden her yet although they said I could, as I am waiting to start lessons this week. I spoke with the trainer, and she said she's a really good horse, and that she would work with both of us on training. I guess I've just kind of bonded with her. They told me she was slow and pokey, but I have had her on a lunge rope and she goes like crazy. I guess I'm just in love with her. Hope I explained it.

Another fellow pit bull owner! Hooray!

Just wondering...Do your PBs ever fight with each other? I'd love to get mine a friend, but he "attacked" a little dog about a year ago so I'm afraid what might happen. It was a male....maybe he'd do ok with a female?

He is pretty lonely when I am not there....he stays inside all the time.

Anyway, welcome! I am here to learn and make friends also, and I won't try to give advice cuz I'm still learning...

Take care!
